Abstract
Energy education provides adults with practical knowledge that can improve their awareness of electricity use, energy equipment, and safety practices. Safe generator operation refers to the knowledge and practices required to operate a fuel-powered generator in a manner that reduces avoidable risks associated with fuel handling, electrical connections, ventilation, equipment placement, and routine operation. Inadequate knowledge of safe generator operation may expose individuals and households to preventable hazards. This study will examine the effect of energy education on adults’ knowledge of safe generator operation. Energy education can provide learning experiences through demonstrations, discussions, visual materials, practical activities, safety exercises, and scenario-based learning. These activities can introduce adults to basic generator components, safe operating procedures, appropriate placement, fuel-handling precautions, electrical safety, and routine shutdown practices. Demonstrations can help learners observe appropriate procedures, while practical safety scenarios can enable them to identify potentially unsafe operating situations. Such learning experiences can make generator-safety information more practical and understandable. Knowledge of safe generator operation involves understanding the basic precautions and procedures that should be followed before, during, and after using a generator. This includes knowledge of safe placement and ventilation, appropriate fuel handling, electrical connection precautions, equipment inspection, safe operation, and proper shutdown practices. Adequate knowledge can help adults recognize unsafe conditions and adopt safer practices when using generators. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education, energy-literacy, vocational, and community learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate safety knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of safe generator operation. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of energy education on adults’ knowledge of safe generator operation. The study is expected to establish that energy education has a positive effect on adults’ knowledge of safe generator operation. Adults exposed to relevant energy education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of appropriate generator placement, ventilation, fuel handling, electrical safety, operating procedures, and safe shutdown practices. The study is also expected to indicate that demonstrations, visual learning materials, and realistic safety scenarios can strengthen adults’ ability to recognize and avoid unsafe generator-operating practices. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, energy educators, community educators, workplace safety trainers, and programme developers. Energy education programmes should incorporate practical safety demonstrations and realistic generator-use scenarios that allow adults to identify hazards and understand appropriate operating procedures. Facilitators should also emphasize the importance of following manufacturer instructions and seeking qualified assistance when electrical installation or technical maintenance is beyond the learner’s competence. The study will be significant to adult learners, households, community members, workplace participants, educators, and organizations concerned with energy and safety education. It will recommend that adult education programmes provide accessible and practical instruction on safe generator operation through demonstrations, guided activities, and scenario-based learning. The study will conclude that appropriately structured energy education can improve adults’ knowledge of safe generator operation and strengthen their awareness of practices that support safer use of generator equipment.
