Effect of Environmental Literacy Education on Adults’ Waste Reduction Practices

Abstract

Environmental literacy education refers to organized learning experiences that provide adults with knowledge and awareness about environmental issues, sustainable practices, waste management, and responsible use of natural resources, while waste reduction practices refer to actions taken to minimize the amount of waste generated, including reducing unnecessary consumption, reusing materials, recycling, and avoiding excessive use of disposable products. Effective environmental literacy is important because adults need adequate knowledge to make responsible decisions about waste generation and disposal. However, limited understanding of waste-related environmental problems may contribute to poor waste reduction practices among adults. Therefore, this study will examine the effect of environmental literacy education on adults’ waste reduction practices. Environmental literacy education exposes adults to concepts such as environmental conservation, waste generation, waste hierarchy, reuse, recycling, responsible consumption, pollution prevention, and sustainable resource management. Through classroom instruction, community workshops, practical demonstrations, environmental campaigns, and group discussions, adults can acquire knowledge about the causes and consequences of excessive waste generation. These learning experiences can also provide practical information on how households and individuals can reduce the amount of waste they generate. Waste reduction practices involve deliberate actions aimed at preventing or minimizing waste generation before disposal becomes necessary. Such practices may include purchasing products with less packaging, avoiding unnecessary disposable materials, reusing household items, separating recyclable materials, repairing usable items, and reducing food waste. Adults with adequate environmental literacy may be better prepared to recognize the environmental consequences of excessive waste and adopt appropriate practices that reduce waste generation. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected environmental literacy education programmes within the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a practical assessment designed to measure environmental literacy education and adults’ waste reduction practices. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that environmental literacy education has a significant positive effect on adults’ waste reduction practices. It is expected that adults exposed to environmental literacy education will demonstrate better understanding of waste reduction principles and greater adoption of appropriate waste reduction practices. The study may also establish that environmental literacy education improves adults’ awareness of the environmental consequences of excessive waste generation and encourages more responsible consumption and waste management practices. The findings will have implications for adult education teaching and learning by emphasizing the importance of practical environmental education in promoting sustainable behaviour among adults. Adult education facilitators may incorporate practical demonstrations, waste-sorting exercises, recycling activities, environmental projects, case studies, and community-based learning into environmental literacy programmes. Such approaches can help adults translate environmental knowledge into practical waste reduction actions. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult education facilitators, environmental educators, community leaders, environmental organizations, local authorities, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from improved knowledge of sustainable waste management, while facilitators may gain useful information for developing more practical environmental literacy programmes. Environmental organizations and local authorities may also use the findings to strengthen educational initiatives aimed at reducing waste generation within communities. The study will recommend that environmental literacy education programmes should include practical lessons on waste prevention, reuse, recycling, responsible consumption, and sustainable waste management. Adult education providers should organize demonstrations and community-based activities that enable adults to practise waste reduction techniques. Environmental organizations and local authorities should also support continuous environmental literacy programmes to encourage responsible waste practices. The study concludes that effective environmental literacy education can contribute to improved waste reduction practices among adults.
