Effect of Inclusive Adult Learning Programmes on Social Interaction among Adult Learners with Disabilities
Abstract
Inclusive adult learning programmes are educational programmes designed to provide equitable learning opportunities for adults with different abilities and learning needs, while social interaction refers to the communication, relationships, cooperation, and interpersonal exchanges that occur among individuals. Adult learners with disabilities may experience isolation, communication barriers, limited opportunities for interaction, and exclusion from learning activities, which can affect their social relationships. Inclusive adult learning programmes can provide supportive environments where learners with disabilities interact with educators and peers while participating in shared learning activities. Therefore, this study will examine the effect of inclusive adult learning programmes on social interaction among adult learners with disabilities. Inclusive adult learning programmes may involve accessible learning facilities, adapted instructional materials, flexible teaching methods, assistive resources, collaborative activities, and appropriate learner support. These provisions enable adults with disabilities to participate in learning activities alongside other learners while receiving the support required to overcome barriers. Group discussions, peer learning, practical activities, and cooperative tasks can also provide opportunities for learners to communicate and develop relationships within the learning environment. Social interaction among adult learners involves communication with peers and educators, participation in group discussions, cooperation during learning activities, sharing ideas, and developing positive interpersonal relationships. Adult learners with disabilities who participate in inclusive learning environments may have more opportunities to communicate with others and develop confidence in social situations. Inclusive adult learning programmes can therefore create conditions that encourage meaningful interaction by reducing barriers to communication and providing opportunities for learners to work and learn together. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adult learners with disabilities participating in selected inclusive adult learning programmes and learning centres. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to inclusive adult learning programmes and social interaction among adult learners with disabilities. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that inclusive adult learning programmes have a significant positive effect on social interaction among adult learners with disabilities. It is expected that learners who participate in accessible, supportive, and collaborative learning environments will demonstrate greater communication, cooperation, peer interaction, and interpersonal engagement. The findings may further indicate that inclusive learning practices can reduce social barriers and create more opportunities for adults with disabilities to develop meaningful relationships within educational settings. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning by emphasizing the importance of collaborative and inclusive instructional practices in adult education. Adult educators may incorporate group discussions, peer learning, cooperative tasks, practical activities, and inclusive classroom interactions into their teaching. Educators may also need to adapt learning activities and communication approaches to ensure that adults with different disabilities can participate meaningfully in social and educational interactions. The study will be beneficial to adult learners with disabilities, adult educators, adult learning centres, educational administrators, disability support organizations, and policymakers. Adult learners with disabilities may benefit from increased opportunities for communication and interaction, while adult educators may gain useful information for developing more inclusive learning practices. Educational administrators and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen programmes and support systems that promote social interaction and inclusion among adult learners with disabilities. The study recommends that adult education providers should develop inclusive learning programmes that encourage communication, cooperation, peer interaction, and active participation among learners with disabilities. Adult educators should use collaborative teaching strategies, accessible learning materials, and appropriate support systems to create learning environments that encourage meaningful interaction. It is concluded that inclusive adult learning programmes can contribute significantly to improved social interaction among adult learners with disabilities by creating supportive educational environments that promote communication, cooperation, and interpersonal relationships.
