Effect of Learning Discipline on Programme Completion among Adult Learners

Abstract

Learning discipline refers to the extent to which adult learners demonstrate regularity, commitment, self-control, punctuality, responsibility, and consistency in carrying out required learning activities, while programme completion refers to the ability of learners to remain in an educational programme until they fulfil its requirements and successfully finish it. Adult learners often combine education with work, family, and other responsibilities, which may make sustained commitment to learning challenging. This study will examine the effect of learning discipline on programme completion among adult learners, with the purpose of determining whether learners’ discipline influences their ability to complete adult education programmes. Learning discipline involves maintaining regular attendance, completing assigned learning tasks, adhering to programme schedules, preparing adequately for learning activities, meeting deadlines, and remaining committed to educational responsibilities. Disciplined learners are more likely to organise their learning activities and make consistent efforts toward achieving programme requirements. These practices can help learners maintain continuity throughout the different stages of an educational programme. Programme completion refers to the successful fulfilment of the requirements of an educational programme within the expected period. It may involve attending required learning sessions, completing assignments and assessments, fulfilling practical requirements, and remaining enrolled until the end of the programme. Learners who consistently demonstrate disciplined learning practices may be better positioned to meet programme requirements and remain engaged until completion. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adult learners enrolled in selected adult education programmes. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure learning discipline, while programme completion will be assessed using appropriate programme completion records or measures. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that learning discipline has a significant effect on programme completion among adult learners. It is expected that adult learners who demonstrate higher levels of discipline will be more likely to remain engaged with their programmes and fulfil programme requirements. The study may further establish that regular attendance, timely completion of learning tasks, adherence to schedules, and consistent commitment contribute to successful programme completion. The findings will have implications for adult education teaching and programme administration. Adult educators may need to encourage learners to develop disciplined learning habits from the beginning of their programmes. Programme administrators can also provide clear schedules, deadlines, attendance expectations, and learning requirements to help learners organise their educational responsibilities and remain committed to programme completion. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, programme administrators, educational planners, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from developing stronger learning discipline to support successful completion of their educational programmes. Adult educators and administrators may gain useful information for identifying learning practices that encourage programme continuity, while educational planners and policymakers may use the findings when developing strategies for improving completion rates in adult education. The study will recommend that adult education providers should encourage learning discipline through clear programme expectations, regular monitoring of attendance, timely feedback, and appropriate guidance on managing learning responsibilities. Adult educators should help learners develop consistent study routines, meet deadlines, and remain committed to programme requirements. Learners should also take personal responsibility for maintaining regular attendance and completing assigned activities. The study will conclude that learning discipline can contribute significantly to programme completion among adult learners and should be encouraged throughout adult education programmes.
