Effect of Parent Literacy Programmes on Participation in Children’s Schoolwork

Abstract

Parent literacy programmes are organized educational activities designed to improve parents’ reading, writing, comprehension, and information-use abilities, while participation in children’s schoolwork refers to parents’ involvement in activities that support their children’s academic learning at home and in connection with school requirements. Parents’ ability to understand learning materials and school instructions can influence how effectively they support their children’s academic activities. However, limited literacy skills may make it difficult for some parents to participate effectively in their children’s schoolwork. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of parent literacy programmes on participation in children’s schoolwork. Parent literacy programmes may include reading and writing classes, comprehension activities, educational guidance sessions, practical literacy exercises, and learning activities related to parents’ everyday responsibilities. These programmes help parents develop the ability to read school materials, understand written instructions, interpret learning tasks, and communicate more effectively about their children’s education. Regular participation in such programmes may improve parents’ confidence and ability to engage with educational materials. Participation in children’s schoolwork involves helping with homework, reviewing school assignments, reading with children, monitoring learning activities, discussing schoolwork, and providing appropriate academic support at home. Parents who possess adequate literacy skills may find it easier to understand their children’s assignments and provide relevant assistance. Parent literacy programmes may therefore contribute to increased participation by equipping parents with practical skills needed to engage meaningfully in their children’s schoolwork. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise parents of school-age children in selected communities. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a literacy-based assessment designed to measure exposure to parent literacy programmes and participation in children’s schoolwork. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that parent literacy programmes have a positive effect on parents’ participation in children’s schoolwork. Parents who participate in literacy programmes are expected to demonstrate greater ability and confidence in understanding school assignments, reading educational materials, and assisting their children with learning activities. The study may further show that improved parental literacy can encourage more consistent involvement in children’s academic work. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning because active parental support can reinforce learning beyond the classroom. Teachers may benefit from parents who are better able to understand assignments and educational instructions, while children may receive more appropriate academic assistance at home. Parent literacy programmes can therefore serve as an important means of strengthening the connection between school learning and home-based educational support. The study will be beneficial to parents, children, teachers, school administrators, adult education practitioners, education planners, and researchers. Parents may improve their ability to support children’s academic activities, while teachers and schools may gain insight into the importance of strengthening parental literacy. Adult education practitioners and education planners may also use the findings to improve literacy programmes that address parents’ educational needs. The study will recommend that parent literacy programmes include practical reading, writing, comprehension, and schoolwork-related activities that directly prepare parents to support their children’s learning. Schools should also encourage collaboration with adult education providers to improve parents’ literacy skills and create accessible opportunities for continued learning. It is concluded that effective parent literacy programmes can strengthen parents’ capacity to participate meaningfully in their children’s schoolwork.
