Effect of Peace Education on Conflict Management Participation among Adult Learners
Abstract
Peace education refers to organized learning that develops knowledge, attitudes, values, and skills for promoting peaceful relationships and addressing disagreements constructively, while conflict management participation refers to the involvement of adult learners in activities aimed at preventing, managing, or resolving conflicts through appropriate approaches. Effective conflict management is important for maintaining harmonious relationships in learning environments and communities. However, limited knowledge of peaceful communication and conflict management approaches may reduce adult learners’ ability to participate effectively in managing disagreements. This study therefore aims to examine the effect of peace education on conflict management participation among adult learners. Peace education provides learners with opportunities to develop knowledge and skills related to tolerance, dialogue, cooperation, respect, negotiation, active listening, and non-violent approaches to disagreements. Through discussions, group activities, role-playing, case studies, and reflective learning, adult learners can examine the causes and consequences of conflicts and explore constructive ways of responding to them. These learning experiences can improve learners’ understanding of peaceful approaches to managing interpersonal and group disagreements. Conflict management participation among adult learners involves taking part in discussions, dialogue sessions, mediation-related activities, negotiation, peer support, and other appropriate efforts aimed at managing disagreements. Active participation requires learners to communicate effectively, listen to different perspectives, and contribute to constructive solutions. Peace education may therefore influence conflict management participation by providing adult learners with relevant knowledge, attitudes, and practical skills for responding appropriately to conflict situations. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adult learners in selected adult education centres. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to peace education and participation in conflict management activities. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that peace education has a positive effect on conflict management participation among adult learners. Adult learners who receive peace education are expected to demonstrate greater willingness and ability to participate in activities aimed at managing disagreements constructively. The study may further establish that knowledge of dialogue, tolerance, active listening, negotiation, and non-violent approaches can encourage more meaningful participation in conflict management activities. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning because peace education can provide adult learners with practical skills that are applicable to interpersonal and group situations. Participatory learning methods such as role-playing, group discussions, and case studies may help learners understand how conflict management principles can be applied in real-life situations. Adult educators can therefore integrate peace-oriented learning activities into teaching to develop learners’ constructive approaches to conflict. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, community leaders, educational administrators, peace educators, education planners, and researchers. Adult learners may acquire useful knowledge and skills for participating constructively in conflict management, while adult educators may gain insight into the value of incorporating peace education into adult learning programmes. Education planners and peace educators may also use the findings to strengthen programmes that promote peaceful interaction and effective conflict management. The study will recommend that adult education programmes incorporate practical peace education activities focusing on dialogue, tolerance, active listening, negotiation, cooperation, and non-violent conflict management. Adult learning centres should provide opportunities for learners to practise these skills through group discussions, role-playing, and other participatory activities. It is concluded that effective peace education can equip adult learners with knowledge and skills that encourage meaningful participation in conflict management.
