Effect of Reading Practices on Learning Achievement among Adult Learners

Abstract

Reading practices refer to the regular habits and activities through which adult learners engage with written materials to acquire, understand, and retain information, while learning achievement refers to the level of knowledge, understanding, skills, and academic performance attained by learners after participating in educational activities. Effective reading practices can help adult learners understand learning materials, reinforce classroom instruction, and improve their ability to retain important information. This study will examine the effect of reading practices on learning achievement among adult learners, with the purpose of determining whether the reading practices adopted by adult learners influence their learning outcomes. Reading practices may include regular reading, reviewing learning materials, taking notes while reading, identifying important ideas, summarising information, using supplementary materials, and allocating adequate time for reading. Adult learners may engage in reading through textbooks, handouts, articles, manuals, and other educational materials. Consistent and purposeful reading can provide learners with opportunities to reinforce concepts introduced during learning sessions and develop greater familiarity with relevant subject matter. Learning achievement refers to the extent to which adult learners attain expected learning outcomes. It may be demonstrated through performance in tests, assignments, examinations, practical activities, and other forms of assessment. Learners who regularly engage with relevant educational materials may develop stronger understanding and retention of concepts. Reading practices can therefore influence learning achievement by providing learners with opportunities to review information, clarify difficult concepts, and strengthen their knowledge. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adult learners enrolled in selected adult education programmes. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure learners’ reading practices, while learning achievement will be assessed using an appropriate achievement measure. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that reading practices have a significant effect on learning achievement among adult learners. It is expected that adult learners who demonstrate regular and effective reading practices will achieve higher learning outcomes than those who demonstrate less consistent reading practices. The study may further establish that activities such as regular review, note-taking, summarising, and purposeful engagement with learning materials contribute to improved understanding and retention. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education programmes. Adult educators may need to encourage learners to develop effective and consistent reading habits as part of their learning activities. Reading exercises, guided study activities, summaries, review tasks, and appropriate reading materials can be incorporated into instruction to help adult learners engage more effectively with educational content. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, adult education programme administrators, educational planners, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from improved reading practices that support stronger learning outcomes, while educators may gain information for developing activities that encourage effective engagement with educational materials. Educational planners and policymakers may also use the findings to support strategies that strengthen learning achievement among adult learners. The study will recommend that adult education programmes should encourage learners to establish regular and purposeful reading practices. Adult educators should provide suitable reading materials and guide learners in effective reading techniques such as reviewing, note-taking, summarising, and identifying key ideas. Learners should also be encouraged to allocate sufficient time to reading and review educational materials consistently. The study will conclude that effective reading practices can improve learning achievement among adult learners and should be encouraged as an important part of adult learning.
