Effect of Skills-Based Adult Education on the Work Participation of Rural Adults
Abstract
Skills-based adult education refers to educational programmes that provide adults with practical, occupational, vocational, and entrepreneurial skills for improving their ability to perform productive activities, while work participation refers to the involvement of individuals in paid employment, self-employment, vocational activities, or other economically productive work. Productive work participation is important for improving household income, reducing economic dependence, and strengthening the livelihood opportunities of rural adults. However, many rural adults face limited access to relevant skills and training opportunities needed to participate effectively in available work activities. This study therefore seeks to examine the effect of skills-based adult education on the work participation of rural adults. Skills-based adult education involves practical learning activities designed to develop competencies that can be applied directly to occupational and economic activities. Such programmes may include vocational training, agricultural skills development, entrepreneurship education, craft training, technical instruction, and other forms of practical adult learning. Through demonstrations, supervised practice, workshops, and hands-on activities, adult learners can acquire competencies that are relevant to their everyday work and livelihood needs. Work participation among rural adults involves engagement in farming, trading, crafts, small-scale enterprises, wage employment, vocational activities, and other productive occupations. Effective participation may depend on the availability of appropriate skills and the ability to apply those skills in practical work situations. Skills-based adult education may therefore influence work participation by providing rural adults with competencies that can improve their ability to enter, maintain, or expand productive work activities. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise rural adults participating in selected skills-based adult education programmes within the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a skills assessment designed to measure exposure to skills-based adult education and work participation among the respondents. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that skills-based adult education has a positive effect on the work participation of rural adults. It is anticipated that rural adults who acquire relevant practical skills through adult education programmes will demonstrate greater involvement in productive work activities. The study may also establish that practical training can improve adults' ability to apply acquired competencies in occupational and livelihood activities. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators should ensure that skills-based programmes are practical, relevant, and closely related to the occupational needs of rural communities. Greater use of demonstrations, practical exercises, workshops, supervised training, and real-life work activities may enable adult learners to acquire skills that can be directly applied in productive settings. The study will be beneficial to rural adults, adult educators, vocational training providers, community organizations, adult education institutions, and policymakers. Rural adults may benefit from improved access to practical skills that support productive work, while adult educators may gain useful information for developing relevant skills-based programmes. Training providers and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen adult education initiatives that support employment and livelihood development in rural communities. The study recommends that skills-based adult education programmes should provide practical training that reflects the existing and emerging work opportunities available to rural adults. Adult educators should emphasize hands-on learning and provide opportunities for learners to practise skills in realistic work situations. Relevant institutions should also expand access to vocational and occupational training programmes in rural communities. The study concludes that effective skills-based adult education can contribute to increased work participation among rural adults.
