Impact of Adult Digital Education on Participation in Online Learning
Abstract
Adult digital education refers to structured learning activities that equip adults with the knowledge and skills required to use digital devices, online platforms, and internet-based resources effectively, while participation in online learning refers to the extent to which adult learners engage in virtual courses, online classes, digital training programmes, and other internet-based learning activities. Digital competence has become increasingly important as educational opportunities continue to expand beyond traditional classrooms. However, some adults experience difficulties participating in online learning because of inadequate digital knowledge and limited confidence in using digital technologies. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of adult digital education on participation in online learning. Adult digital education involves developing practical competencies such as operating digital devices, navigating online platforms, accessing digital learning materials, communicating through online channels, creating and submitting digital assignments, and using basic internet applications. Through structured instruction and practical exercises, adults can become more familiar with digital learning environments and develop the skills required to engage with technology-supported education. The effectiveness of such education may therefore influence adults' willingness and ability to make use of online learning opportunities. Participation in online learning involves adults' involvement in activities such as enrolling in online courses, attending virtual lessons, accessing digital learning resources, completing online tasks, participating in discussion forums, and interacting with instructors and other learners through digital platforms. Adults who possess relevant digital skills may find it easier to navigate online learning environments and participate consistently. Consequently, adult digital education may contribute to improved access to and engagement with online learning opportunities. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adult learners enrolled in selected adult education programmes. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a digital skills assessment designed to measure adult digital education and participation in online learning. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult digital education has a positive impact on participation in online learning. It is anticipated that adults who receive adequate digital education will demonstrate greater ability to access online learning platforms, participate in virtual lessons, use digital learning resources, and complete online learning activities. The study may also reveal that practical digital skills are important for sustaining adults' involvement in technology-supported learning. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators may need to incorporate practical digital activities into their programmes to prepare learners for online learning environments. Teaching approaches that combine demonstrations, guided practice, and hands-on digital activities may help adults develop greater competence in using online educational platforms. This can make technology-supported learning more accessible and meaningful to adult learners. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, educational institutions, programme developers, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from improved digital competence and greater access to flexible learning opportunities. Adult educators may gain useful information for designing digital skills programmes, while educational institutions may use the findings to strengthen online learning support. Policymakers and programme developers may also use the findings to promote inclusive digital education initiatives for adults. The study recommends that adult education programmes should provide practical digital education alongside traditional learning activities. Adult educators should use simple, learner-centred approaches that allow adults to practise essential digital skills regularly. Educational institutions should also provide adequate access to digital devices, internet facilities, and technical support for adult learners. The study concludes that strengthening adult digital education can provide adults with the competencies needed to participate more effectively in online learning.
