Impact of Adult Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Basic Carpentry Techniques

Abstract

Adult education provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can support vocational development, self-reliance, employment, and participation in productive activities. Carpentry involves practical knowledge of wood materials, hand tools, measurements, joints, cutting procedures, assembly, and finishing techniques used in constructing and repairing wooden structures. However, some adults may have inadequate knowledge of basic carpentry techniques because of limited access to organized practical learning opportunities. This study therefore examines the impact of adult education on adults’ knowledge of basic carpentry techniques. Adult education programmes can provide learners with practical and experience-based learning through demonstrations, explanations, guided practice, discussions, and supervised activities. In basic carpentry, adults can learn about different types of wood, identification and proper use of carpentry tools, accurate measurement, marking and cutting of wood, basic wood joints, assembling wooden components, and appropriate workshop safety practices. These learning activities can help adults connect theoretical explanations with practical experiences and develop a better understanding of basic carpentry procedures. Adults’ knowledge of basic carpentry techniques refers to their understanding of the materials, tools, procedures, measurements, joining methods, and safety practices required for simple carpentry activities. Adequate knowledge is important because inaccurate measurement, improper tool handling, incorrect cutting, weak joints, and poor assembly can affect the quality and durability of wooden products. Adult education may therefore improve adults’ knowledge by providing structured instruction, practical demonstrations, and opportunities to observe and practise appropriate carpentry techniques. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education or vocational programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of basic carpentry techniques. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of adult education on adults’ knowledge of basic carpentry techniques. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult education has a positive impact on adults’ knowledge of basic carpentry techniques. Adults exposed to structured learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of wood materials, carpentry tools, measurement, marking and cutting, basic wood joints, assembly procedures, and workshop safety. The findings may further indicate that practical demonstrations and supervised activities provide adults with better opportunities to understand and retain knowledge of basic carpentry procedures. The study will conclude that adult education can serve as an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of basic carpentry techniques. It will recommend that adult education and vocational programmes provide adequate carpentry tools and materials, practical demonstrations, supervised hands-on activities, and appropriate safety guidance. Strengthening these learning opportunities can enhance adults’ practical knowledge, support vocational skill development, and improve their ability to apply basic carpentry techniques in household, occupational, and income-generating activities.
