Impact of Adult Education on Adults’ Understanding of Local Cultural Traditions

Abstract

Local cultural traditions represent the customs, practices, beliefs, values, forms of expression, and social practices that have been transmitted within communities across generations. Adults need adequate understanding of these traditions to appreciate their cultural significance, participate appropriately in community activities, and contribute to their preservation and continuity. However, limited understanding of local cultural traditions may weaken cultural awareness, reduce intergenerational knowledge transmission, and affect adults’ appreciation of their cultural heritage. This study will examine the impact of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of local cultural traditions. Adult Education provides opportunities for adults to acquire knowledge through discussions, storytelling, demonstrations, cultural activities, community-based learning, and experience-sharing. These approaches can expose adults to the historical background, meanings, values, and practices associated with local cultural traditions. Adult Education can also create opportunities for adults to interact with knowledgeable community members and examine how cultural traditions have changed or continued over time. Understanding of local cultural traditions refers to adults’ ability to identify, explain, appreciate, and recognize the significance of customs, practices, values, beliefs, ceremonies, artistic expressions, and other cultural practices within their communities. Such understanding enables adults to participate more meaningfully in cultural activities and appreciate the importance of preserving relevant traditions. Adult Education can strengthen this understanding by connecting learning experiences with authentic cultural practices and encouraging adults to reflect on their cultural significance. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate cultural-knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ understanding of local cultural traditions. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Adult Education on adults’ understanding of local cultural traditions. The study is expected to establish that Adult Education has a positive impact on adults’ understanding of local cultural traditions. Adults who participate in relevant educational activities are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of cultural practices, values, customs, ceremonies, and their significance within the community. The study is also expected to indicate that participatory learning approaches, cultural demonstrations, storytelling, and experience-sharing can make cultural knowledge more meaningful and accessible to adult learners. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, cultural educators, community leaders, cultural organizations, and programme planners. Adult Education programmes should incorporate practical cultural learning activities that allow adults to interact with cultural knowledge and examine its relevance to contemporary community life. Storytelling sessions, cultural demonstrations, community discussions, exhibitions, and intergenerational learning activities may help adults develop deeper understanding and appreciation of local traditions. The study will be significant to adult learners, community members, Adult Education practitioners, cultural organizations, community leaders, and stakeholders concerned with cultural preservation. It is expected to demonstrate the value of Adult Education in strengthening adults’ understanding of cultural traditions and supporting the transmission of cultural knowledge across generations. The study will recommend greater inclusion of relevant local cultural content and participatory cultural activities in Adult Education programmes. It will conclude that effective Adult Education can contribute to improved understanding of local cultural traditions and support their appreciation, continuity, and preservation.
