Impact of Adult Education on Cultural Knowledge Transmission between Generations
Abstract
Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities designed to develop adults’ knowledge, skills, values, and understanding, while cultural knowledge transmission refers to the process through which cultural beliefs, values, traditions, practices, skills, stories, and indigenous knowledge are passed from one generation to another. Cultural knowledge transmission is important for maintaining cultural continuity and ensuring that younger generations understand and appreciate the heritage of their communities. However, changes in lifestyles, modernization, and reduced interaction between older and younger generations may weaken the transmission of cultural knowledge. Therefore, this study will examine the impact of adult education on cultural knowledge transmission between generations. Adult education can provide opportunities for adults to learn about, document, preserve, and share cultural knowledge. Through community-based learning, discussion sessions, storytelling, cultural workshops, practical demonstrations, and other educational activities, adults can develop greater awareness of traditional knowledge and methods of transmitting it. Adult education can also create learning spaces where older adults share their experiences and cultural knowledge while younger participants gain opportunities to learn directly from them. Cultural knowledge transmission between generations involves the sharing of traditional values, beliefs, language, history, crafts, indigenous practices, stories, customs, and practical knowledge between older and younger members of a community. Adult education may strengthen this process by improving adults’ knowledge of their cultural heritage, communication skills, confidence in sharing cultural knowledge, and ability to organize learning activities across generations. Effective transmission can help younger generations acquire cultural knowledge while allowing older adults to remain active contributors to cultural learning. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education programmes in the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to adult education and cultural knowledge transmission practices between generations. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive impact on cultural knowledge transmission between generations. It is expected that adults who participate actively in adult education programmes will demonstrate greater knowledge of cultural practices, stronger confidence in sharing cultural knowledge, and greater involvement in activities through which cultural knowledge is transmitted to younger generations. The findings will have implications for adult education teaching and learning by emphasizing the importance of intergenerational approaches to community-based education. Adult educators may incorporate storytelling, oral history, cultural demonstrations, group discussions, mentoring activities, and practical learning into adult education programmes. These approaches can provide opportunities for adults to share cultural knowledge while encouraging younger generations to engage with and learn from experienced community members. The study will be significant to adult educators, adult learners, younger generations, community leaders, traditional institutions, cultural organizations, policymakers, and researchers. Adult educators may use the findings to develop programmes that encourage intergenerational learning, while community leaders and cultural organizations may gain useful information for strengthening the transmission of cultural knowledge. The study may also contribute to the preservation of valuable cultural knowledge and the development of stronger relationships between generations. The study will recommend that adult education programmes incorporate intergenerational learning activities that encourage the sharing of cultural knowledge between older and younger community members. Adult educators should promote storytelling, oral history projects, cultural demonstrations, traditional skills workshops, and other practical learning activities. Community leaders and cultural organizations should also support programmes that provide regular opportunities for intergenerational knowledge exchange. The study will conclude that effective adult education can provide an important platform for strengthening cultural knowledge transmission and maintaining cultural continuity across generations.
