Impact of Adult Education on Parents’ Ability to Access Educational Information

Abstract

Adult education refers to organized learning opportunities that provide adults with knowledge, skills, and competencies for improving their personal, family, and social lives, while parents’ ability to access educational information refers to their capacity to obtain, understand, and use information related to their children’s schooling and educational opportunities. Access to relevant educational information enables parents to understand school requirements, academic programmes, learning opportunities, and other information necessary to support their children’s education. However, limited educational knowledge and difficulties in obtaining relevant information may restrict effective parental support. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of adult education on parents’ ability to access educational information. Adult education provides parents with opportunities to develop literacy, communication, information-use, and problem-solving skills. Through adult learning programmes, parents may acquire the ability to read educational materials, interpret school notices, understand academic information, and identify appropriate sources of educational information. Such programmes can also expose parents to different channels through which educational information is communicated, thereby improving their confidence in seeking and using information relevant to their children’s schooling. Parents’ ability to access educational information involves locating relevant information, understanding its meaning, identifying appropriate sources, and obtaining information about school activities, educational requirements, learning opportunities, and academic support. Parents who can effectively access such information are better positioned to respond to school communications and make informed educational decisions. Adult education may therefore improve this ability by strengthening the knowledge and skills required to obtain and understand educational information. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise parents of school-age children in selected communities. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and an information-access assessment designed to measure exposure to adult education and parents’ ability to access educational information. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult education has a positive impact on parents’ ability to access educational information. Parents who have greater exposure to adult education are expected to demonstrate stronger abilities to locate, understand, and use information relating to their children’s schooling. The study may further indicate that adult education can reduce difficulties associated with interpreting educational information and improve parents’ confidence in obtaining relevant information from appropriate sources. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning because parents who can access educational information effectively may be better prepared to understand school requirements and support their children’s learning. Teachers may also experience improved communication with parents when educational information is clearly understood. Schools can consequently benefit from parents who are better informed about educational programmes, academic expectations, and available learning opportunities. The study will be beneficial to parents, teachers, school administrators, adult education practitioners, education planners, and researchers. Parents may gain improved capacity to obtain and understand information concerning their children’s education. Teachers and school administrators may use the findings to develop more accessible approaches for communicating educational information, while adult education practitioners and education planners may use the results to strengthen programmes that develop parents’ information-access skills. The study will recommend that adult education programmes incorporate practical activities that develop parents’ ability to locate, interpret, and use educational information. Schools should also provide clear and accessible educational information through channels that parents can easily understand and use. It is concluded that adult education can contribute to improving parents’ ability to access educational information and thereby strengthen their capacity to make informed decisions concerning their children’s education.
