Impact of Adult Learning Activities on the Social Connectedness of Older Adults

Abstract

Adult learning activities refer to organized educational experiences through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, and experiences through formal, non-formal, or informal learning opportunities, while social connectedness refers to the extent to which individuals maintain meaningful relationships, interpersonal connections, and a sense of belonging with others. Older adults may experience reduced social networks and fewer opportunities for regular interaction due to retirement, changes in family relationships, or other transitions associated with ageing. This study will examine the impact of adult learning activities on the social connectedness of older adults. Adult learning activities may include literacy classes, skills development, discussion groups, workshops, cultural learning, community-based learning, and other educational experiences. These activities provide opportunities for older adults to interact with educators and fellow learners while acquiring useful knowledge and skills. Regular involvement in learning activities can create structured opportunities for communication, experience sharing, cooperation, and the development of new relationships. Social connectedness among older adults involves maintaining relationships with family members, friends, peers, and other members of the community, as well as experiencing a sense of belonging and social support. Participation in adult learning activities can provide older adults with opportunities to meet others, exchange experiences, communicate regularly, and develop meaningful relationships. Adult learning may therefore contribute to stronger social networks and reduce the likelihood of social isolation among older adults. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise older adults participating in selected adult learning activities in the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in adult learning activities and the level of social connectedness among older adults. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult learning activities have a significant positive impact on the social connectedness of older adults. It is expected that older adults who participate regularly in learning activities will demonstrate stronger interpersonal relationships, greater opportunities for social contact, increased interaction with peers, and a stronger sense of belonging. The study may also establish that learning environments provide valuable opportunities for older adults to maintain and develop meaningful social connections. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of older adults. Adult educators should incorporate interactive and collaborative approaches such as group discussions, peer learning, experience sharing, practical activities, and cooperative learning tasks. These approaches can make learning more engaging while creating opportunities for older adults to communicate, establish relationships, and learn from one another. The study will be beneficial to older adults, adult educators, community learning providers, social development organizations, organizations supporting older persons, and policymakers. Older adults may benefit from increased opportunities for meaningful interaction and relationship building, while adult educators may gain useful information for developing learning activities that support social connectedness. Relevant organizations may also use the findings to strengthen educational programmes that promote social engagement among older adults. The study will recommend that adult education providers develop accessible, flexible, and age-appropriate learning activities that encourage regular interaction among older adults. Adult educators should use collaborative learning, peer activities, group discussions, and experience-based learning to promote communication and relationship building. Community organizations should also support learning environments that enable older adults to establish and maintain meaningful social connections. In conclusion, adult learning activities can provide valuable opportunities for older adults to strengthen social relationships, develop supportive networks, and maintain a greater sense of social connectedness.
