Impact of Adult Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of Basic Garment Construction
Abstract
Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can support personal development, vocational participation, and improved livelihood opportunities. Basic garment construction involves knowledge of measurements, fabric preparation, pattern arrangement, cutting, stitching, seams, finishing techniques, and the appropriate use of garment-making tools. However, some adults may have limited knowledge of the fundamental processes required to construct simple garments effectively. This study will examine the impact of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of basic garment construction and determine how participation in organized learning activities can improve their understanding of fundamental garment-making processes. Adult learning can provide practical and participatory experiences through demonstrations, guided practice, discussions, illustrations, and hands-on activities. In garment construction, these learning experiences can expose adults to basic concepts such as taking body measurements, selecting suitable fabrics, preparing patterns, laying and cutting fabric, joining garment sections, applying seams, and carrying out simple finishing operations. Repeated practice and guidance can help learners understand the sequence of garment construction activities and develop greater confidence in applying the knowledge acquired during learning sessions. Knowledge of basic garment construction involves the ability to recognize and explain essential construction processes and understand how different stages contribute to the production of a finished garment. Adults need to understand appropriate measurements, fabric handling, pattern placement, cutting procedures, stitching methods, and finishing techniques. Adequate knowledge can enable learners to participate more effectively in simple garment-making activities and make informed decisions when carrying out clothing-related tasks. Adult learning may therefore contribute to improved practical knowledge by connecting explanations with demonstrations and opportunities for supervised practice. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education and vocational learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of basic garment construction. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of basic garment construction. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult learning contributes positively to adults’ knowledge of basic garment construction. It is expected that adults exposed to organized learning experiences will demonstrate improved understanding of measurement procedures, fabric preparation, pattern arrangement, cutting, stitching, seam construction, and garment finishing. The findings are also expected to show that practical demonstrations and repeated hands-on activities can strengthen learners’ ability to understand and apply the different stages involved in basic garment construction. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, vocational instructors, facilitators, and programme developers. Adult learning programmes may benefit from incorporating practical demonstrations, supervised garment-making exercises, visual learning materials, peer activities, and task-based instruction into relevant programmes. Providing learners with opportunities to practise each stage of garment construction can make learning more meaningful while helping adults connect acquired knowledge with practical clothing-production activities and potential livelihood applications. The study will be significant to adult learners, vocational training providers, community learning programmes, and stakeholders interested in practical skills development. It will recommend that adult learning programmes provide adequate practical resources, qualified facilitators, and opportunities for learners to practise basic garment construction processes in supportive learning environments. The study will conclude that well-organized adult learning can strengthen adults’ knowledge of basic garment construction and contribute to their capacity to apply garment-making knowledge in practical, household, and vocational activities.
