Impact of Adult Learning on Adults’ Knowledge of Curtain-Making Techniques

Abstract

Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can support personal development, vocational competence, creativity, and income-generating activities. Curtain-making is a practical skill that involves the selection of suitable fabrics, accurate measurement, cutting, stitching, finishing, and proper installation of curtains. However, limited access to practical learning opportunities may affect adults’ knowledge of appropriate curtain-making techniques. This study will examine the impact of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of curtain-making techniques. Adult learning activities in curtain-making may expose adults to different aspects of curtain production, including fabric identification and selection, measurement of windows and materials, pattern preparation, fabric cutting, stitching, hemming, pleating, lining, and finishing. Learning activities may include demonstrations, discussions, practical exercises, supervised projects, and repeated use of sewing tools and materials. These activities can enable adults to understand the sequence of curtain-making processes and develop familiarity with appropriate techniques for producing functional and attractive curtains. Adults’ knowledge of curtain-making techniques refers to their understanding of the materials, tools, processes, and procedures required for producing curtains effectively. This may include knowledge of fabric selection, measurement, cutting, stitching, hemming, pleating, lining, finishing, and basic installation procedures. Adult learning can improve this knowledge by combining relevant explanations with practical demonstrations and hands-on activities that allow learners to observe, practise, and apply different curtain-making techniques. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult learning, vocational, or skills-development programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and a curtain-making techniques knowledge assessment designed to measure adults’ knowledge of relevant materials, tools, and production procedures. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of adult learning on adults’ knowledge of curtain-making techniques. The study is expected to establish that adult learning can improve adults’ knowledge of curtain-making techniques. Adults exposed to structured learning are expected to demonstrate better knowledge of fabric selection, measurement, cutting, stitching, hemming, pleating, lining, and finishing procedures. The findings may also indicate that practical demonstrations, supervised exercises, and repeated practice enhance adults’ ability to understand and apply appropriate curtain-making techniques. The study will conclude that adult learning can provide an effective avenue for improving adults’ knowledge of curtain-making techniques. It will recommend that adult learning programmes provide adequate practical sessions, relevant sewing tools and materials, demonstrations, supervised curtain-making projects, and opportunities for repeated practice. Improved knowledge of curtain-making techniques may contribute to vocational competence, creativity, self-reliance, home improvement skills, small-scale enterprise development, and income-generating opportunities
