Impact of Adult Learning on Adults’ Participation in Local Skill-Sharing Activities

Abstract

Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge, skills, and experiences that can be applied to everyday life and community settings. Local skill-sharing activities create opportunities for adults to exchange practical abilities, demonstrate useful techniques, and learn from one another through organised or informal learning activities. However, some adults may have limited involvement in skill-sharing activities due to inadequate awareness, low confidence, or limited exposure to learning opportunities. This study will examine the impact of adult learning on adults’ participation in local skill-sharing activities, with the purpose of determining whether adult learning influences adults’ involvement in activities through which practical skills and knowledge are exchanged. Adult learning involves formal, non-formal, and informal learning experiences through which adults develop knowledge, practical skills, attitudes, and competencies. Such learning may take place through adult education classes, workshops, practical demonstrations, peer learning, community-based training, and other learning activities. These experiences can strengthen adults’ confidence, communication abilities, and willingness to share what they know with others. Adult learning may therefore provide a foundation for adults to participate more actively in local skill-sharing opportunities. Participation in local skill-sharing activities refers to adults’ involvement in activities where individuals exchange practical knowledge, techniques, experiences, and skills with other members of their communities. These activities may include demonstrations, peer-to-peer learning sessions, practical workshops, craft-sharing sessions, agricultural skill exchanges, and other locally organised learning activities. Adult learning can influence participation by improving adults’ knowledge, confidence, communication skills, and appreciation of collaborative learning, thereby encouraging them to both acquire and share useful skills. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adult learners and adult community members who have access to local skill-sharing activities in selected communities. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to adult learning and participation in local skill-sharing activities. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult learning has a positive impact on adults’ participation in local skill-sharing activities. It is expected that adults with greater exposure to adult learning opportunities will demonstrate higher levels of involvement in activities involving the exchange of practical knowledge and skills. The study may further establish that adult learning improves adults’ confidence and readiness to contribute their knowledge while also learning useful skills from other community members. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of adult education. Adult educators may need to incorporate collaborative and practical learning approaches that encourage adults to share knowledge and skills with one another. Peer teaching, group demonstrations, practical workshops, and experience-sharing activities can provide opportunities for learners to apply acquired knowledge while developing the confidence to contribute to collective learning. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, community learning providers, skill-sharing groups, community organisations, and educational planners. Adult learners may benefit from increased opportunities to exchange practical knowledge and develop useful competencies, while adult educators may gain information for designing learning programmes that encourage collaborative knowledge exchange. Community organisations may also use the findings to strengthen locally based learning opportunities for adults. The study will recommend that adult learning programmes should incorporate peer-learning and practical skill-sharing activities that allow adults to exchange knowledge and demonstrate useful skills. Community organisations should provide accessible opportunities for adults to share and acquire practical knowledge, while adult educators should encourage collaborative learning approaches within and beyond formal learning settings. The study will conclude that adult learning can contribute significantly to increasing adults’ participation in local skill-sharing activities.
