Impact of Adult Learning on Adults’ Understanding of Basic Property Maintenance Responsibilities

Abstract

Basic property maintenance responsibilities refer to the routine duties involved in keeping residential or other occupied properties in functional, safe, clean, and suitable condition. Adult Learning can provide adults with practical knowledge about the responsibilities associated with maintaining property and identifying routine maintenance needs. This study will examine the impact of Adult Learning on adults’ understanding of basic property maintenance responsibilities, focusing on routine inspections, cleanliness, minor maintenance activities, proper reporting of faults, and responsible care of property facilities. The study is motivated by the need to strengthen adults’ understanding of appropriate property maintenance responsibilities and encourage responsible care of residential environments. Adult Learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge through demonstrations, discussions, observation, guided activities, and problem-solving exercises. In relation to property maintenance, learning activities can expose adults to routine maintenance tasks and explain the responsibilities associated with caring for different parts of a property. Adults can learn how to identify basic maintenance needs, maintain cleanliness, observe signs of deterioration, and report faults that require professional attention. Practical learning can make property maintenance concepts easier to understand by connecting them with situations adults encounter in their homes and communities. Adults’ understanding of basic property maintenance responsibilities refers to their ability to identify, explain, and appropriately carry out or report routine duties required for the proper care of property. Adequate understanding can help adults recognise maintenance needs before they become more serious and distinguish between tasks that can be handled routinely and those requiring qualified assistance. Adult Learning can strengthen this understanding through practical demonstrations, illustrations, maintenance scenarios, and guided discussions. Improved understanding may therefore encourage more responsible attitudes toward property care and contribute to the preservation of household facilities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate understanding assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of basic property maintenance responsibilities. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Adult Learning on adults’ understanding of basic property maintenance responsibilities. The study is expected to establish that participation in Adult Learning programmes has a positive impact on adults’ understanding of basic property maintenance responsibilities. Adults exposed to relevant learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of routine inspections, cleanliness, basic maintenance needs, fault reporting, and responsible care of property facilities. The study may further establish that practical demonstrations and real-life maintenance scenarios are effective approaches for helping adults connect property-maintenance knowledge with their everyday responsibilities. The study is expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community educators, housing educators, property managers, and organisations involved in community development programmes. Adult Learning programmes may incorporate practical property-maintenance demonstrations, illustrated maintenance guides, and problem-solving activities to strengthen adults’ understanding. Such approaches can make learning more relevant to everyday living and encourage adults to take appropriate responsibility for maintaining property while seeking professional assistance when necessary. The study will be significant to adults, households, tenants, property owners, Adult Education practitioners, community organisations, and other stakeholders concerned with responsible property care. It is expected to recommend the integration of basic property maintenance education into relevant Adult Learning and community education programmes, with emphasis on practical activities and accessible learning materials. The study will conclude that effective Adult Learning can improve adults’ understanding of basic property maintenance responsibilities and contribute to more responsible care and preservation of property facilities.
