Impact of Adult Learning on Adults’ Understanding of Electricity Meter Readings
Abstract
Adult learning provides opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and everyday competencies that can improve their ability to manage household and community activities. Electricity meter readings refer to the numerical information displayed by an electricity meter to indicate the amount of electrical energy recorded over a particular period. Understanding these readings is important for monitoring electricity consumption, interpreting usage information, and making informed decisions about household energy use. However, some adults may experience difficulty interpreting meter displays and understanding what the recorded figures represent. This study will examine the impact of adult learning on adults’ understanding of electricity meter readings. Adult learning can introduce electricity-meter concepts through discussions, demonstrations, visual materials, practical exercises, and guided interpretation activities. These learning experiences can help adults identify different parts of a meter display, recognize relevant numerical readings, and understand how meter information relates to electricity consumption. Practical activities involving sample meter displays can provide opportunities for learners to interpret readings and discuss common sources of confusion. Such experiences can make technical energy information more accessible and improve adults’ confidence in interpreting electricity-meter information. Understanding electricity meter readings involves the ability to recognize the relevant figures displayed on a meter and interpret their meaning in relation to electricity consumption. It may include distinguishing current readings from previous readings, understanding changes in recorded consumption, and using meter information to monitor household energy use. Adequate understanding can help adults become more aware of their electricity consumption and make better-informed decisions about energy management. Adult learning may therefore strengthen this understanding by providing practical explanations, demonstrations, and opportunities to interpret realistic meter-reading examples. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education, energy-literacy, and community learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate meter-reading interpretation assessment designed to measure participants’ understanding of electricity meter readings. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of adult learning on adults’ understanding of electricity meter readings. The study is expected to establish that adult learning has a positive impact on adults’ understanding of electricity meter readings. Adults exposed to relevant learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved ability to identify meter readings, interpret recorded figures, distinguish relevant numerical information, and understand changes in electricity consumption. The study is also expected to indicate that demonstrations, sample meter displays, guided calculations, and practical interpretation exercises can strengthen adults’ understanding of electricity-meter information. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community educators, energy-literacy facilitators, household-management trainers, and programme developers. Adult learning programmes should incorporate practical energy-literacy activities that allow participants to examine sample meter displays and interpret electricity consumption information. Facilitators should also use simple explanations and realistic examples to help learners connect meter readings with everyday household energy management. The study will be significant to adult learners, households, community members, educators, and organizations interested in energy literacy and responsible household management. It will recommend that adult learning programmes provide accessible and practical instruction on electricity meter readings through demonstrations, visual materials, and guided interpretation activities. The study will conclude that appropriately structured adult learning can improve adults’ understanding of electricity meter readings and strengthen their ability to monitor and make informed decisions concerning household electricity consumption.
