Impact of Adult Learning on Social Interaction among Older Adults
Abstract
Adult learning refers to the process through which adults acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes, and experiences through formal, non-formal, and informal learning opportunities, while social interaction refers to the ways individuals communicate, relate, cooperate, and engage with other people. Among older adults, opportunities for meaningful interaction may become limited because of retirement, reduced social networks, changes in family structure, or limited involvement in community activities. This study will examine the impact of adult learning on social interaction among older adults. Adult learning provides opportunities for older adults to acquire new knowledge and skills while interacting with other learners and educators. Learning activities such as literacy education, skills training, discussion groups, community learning, and continuing education can create regular opportunities for communication and shared experiences. Through these learning experiences, older adults can exchange ideas, develop relationships, participate in group activities, and maintain connections with others. Social interaction among older adults involves communication with peers, participation in group discussions, sharing experiences, cooperation with others, and maintaining interpersonal relationships. Regular involvement in adult learning can provide a supportive environment where older adults interact with people who have similar interests and learning goals. Such interactions may improve communication, encourage companionship, strengthen interpersonal relationships, and reduce feelings of social isolation. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise older adults participating in selected adult learning programmes in the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in adult learning and the level of social interaction among older adults. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that adult learning has a significant positive impact on social interaction among older adults. It is expected that older adults who participate actively in learning programmes will demonstrate higher levels of communication, interpersonal engagement, peer interaction, and relationship building. The study may also establish that adult learning environments provide older adults with regular opportunities to interact with others and maintain meaningful social connections. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education programmes for older adults. Adult educators may use interactive teaching approaches such as group discussions, collaborative learning, peer activities, practical exercises, and experience-sharing sessions. These approaches can make learning more engaging while creating opportunities for older adults to communicate and interact with one another during the learning process. The study will be beneficial to older adults, adult educators, community learning providers, social development organizations, and policymakers concerned with the wellbeing of ageing populations. Older adults may benefit from increased opportunities for communication and relationship building, while adult educators may gain useful information for designing learning environments that encourage social interaction. Organizations supporting older adults may also use the findings to promote educational activities that encourage continued social engagement. The study will recommend that adult education providers design learning programmes that encourage regular communication and interaction among older adults. Adult educators should incorporate collaborative activities, group discussions, peer learning, and experience-sharing into their instructional practices. Community organizations should also provide accessible learning opportunities that enable older adults to remain socially connected. In conclusion, adult learning can provide valuable educational and social opportunities that strengthen communication, relationships, and social interaction among older adults.
