Impact of Adult Learning Programmes on Indigenous Language Preservation

Abstract

Adult learning programmes refer to organized educational activities that provide adults with opportunities to acquire knowledge, skills, values, and competencies, while indigenous language preservation refers to efforts aimed at maintaining, transmitting, documenting, and promoting the use of languages that are traditionally associated with particular communities. Indigenous languages are important for cultural identity, traditional knowledge, historical memory, and intergenerational communication. However, declining use of indigenous languages among younger generations and increasing preference for widely spoken languages can threaten their continued survival. Therefore, this study will examine the impact of adult learning programmes on indigenous language preservation. Adult learning programmes can provide adults with opportunities to learn, practice, teach, and document indigenous languages. Through literacy classes, community learning sessions, language workshops, storytelling activities, cultural discussions, and practical language exercises, adults can strengthen their knowledge of indigenous vocabulary, expressions, oral traditions, and written forms. Such programmes can also create opportunities for older adults to share their language knowledge and experiences with other members of the community, thereby supporting the continued transmission of indigenous languages. Indigenous language preservation involves maintaining the use of indigenous languages in communication, education, cultural activities, documentation, and intergenerational knowledge transmission. Adult learning programmes may contribute to preservation by improving adults’ language knowledge, encouraging regular use of indigenous languages, supporting language documentation, and creating opportunities for adults to teach younger generations. When adults develop greater confidence and competence in using their indigenous languages, they may become more active contributors to efforts aimed at maintaining the language within their communities. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult learning programmes in the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in adult learning programmes and indigenous language preservation practices. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult learning programmes has a positive impact on indigenous language preservation. It is expected that adults who are actively involved in relevant learning programmes will demonstrate stronger knowledge of indigenous languages, more frequent use of indigenous language resources, greater willingness to transmit language knowledge, and stronger involvement in language preservation practices. The findings will have implications for adult education teaching and learning by highlighting the importance of culturally relevant learning experiences. Adult educators may incorporate indigenous language activities, storytelling, oral history, reading exercises, and community-based language projects into adult learning programmes. These approaches can make learning more meaningful while creating opportunities for adults to develop and apply indigenous language skills in practical settings. The study will be significant to adult educators, adult learners, community leaders, cultural organizations, language educators, traditional institutions, policymakers, and researchers. Adult educators may use the findings to develop learning programmes that support indigenous language development, while community leaders and cultural organizations may benefit from improved strategies for encouraging language transmission. The study may also contribute to wider efforts to maintain linguistic diversity and preserve indigenous knowledge. The study will recommend that adult learning programmes incorporate indigenous language learning and preservation activities into appropriate community-based educational programmes. Adult educators should encourage storytelling, reading, writing, documentation, and intergenerational language-learning activities, while community organizations should create opportunities for adults to share indigenous language knowledge with younger people. Greater collaboration between adult education providers, cultural institutions, and language preservation organizations should also be encouraged. The study will conclude that well-designed adult learning programmes can serve as an important avenue for strengthening indigenous language knowledge, use, and intergenerational transmission.
