Impact of AI Education on Adults’ Ability to Identify AI-Generated Content
Abstract
Artificial Intelligence Education is becoming increasingly important as AI systems are used to produce written materials, images, audio, videos, and other forms of digital content. The growing availability of AI-generated content creates a need for adults to develop the ability to recognize content that may have been produced or substantially altered by artificial intelligence. Without adequate knowledge, adults may find it difficult to distinguish AI-generated materials from human-created content and may unknowingly accept or share misleading information. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of AI Education on adults’ ability to identify AI-generated content and determine whether educational exposure can improve their capacity to recognize characteristics associated with artificially generated materials. AI Education provides adults with knowledge about artificial intelligence, generative AI systems, and the processes through which such systems can produce digital content. Through appropriate learning activities, adults can be introduced to common forms of AI-generated text, images, audio, and video and learn about indicators that may warrant closer examination. Education can also introduce learners to verification practices, source evaluation, contextual analysis, and the limitations of relying solely on visual or textual characteristics when determining whether content was generated by AI. These learning experiences can improve adults’ awareness of how artificial intelligence influences the production and circulation of digital information. Adults’ ability to identify AI-generated content refers to their capacity to examine digital materials and determine whether they are likely to have been produced or substantially modified using artificial intelligence. This ability involves careful observation, comparison of content characteristics, examination of contextual information, and appropriate verification before reaching a conclusion. AI Education can strengthen this ability by providing adults with relevant knowledge and practical opportunities to assess different examples of digital content. Improved identification skills can help adults become more cautious when interpreting, accepting, or sharing materials whose origin is uncertain. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate content-identification assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to identify AI-generated content. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of AI Education on adults’ ability to identify AI-generated content. The study is expected to establish that AI Education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to identify AI-generated content. It is expected that adults exposed to relevant educational activities will demonstrate improved ability to examine digital materials, recognize possible indicators of AI generation, evaluate contextual information, and apply appropriate verification practices. The study may further establish that practical exposure to different forms of AI-generated content helps adults develop greater awareness of the challenges associated with identifying artificially produced materials. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners, programme developers, and facilitators. Adult Education programmes can incorporate practical AI-related learning activities that expose adults to different forms of generated and human-created content. Facilitators can use comparison exercises, content-analysis activities, verification tasks, guided discussions, and practical demonstrations to strengthen learners’ ability to evaluate digital materials critically. Such approaches can improve adults’ digital information competencies and prepare them to engage more carefully with increasingly AI-influenced information environments. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, digital literacy organisations, information providers, and programme developers by providing insight into the contribution of AI Education to adults’ ability to recognize AI-generated content. It is recommended that relevant Adult Education programmes provide practical learning opportunities covering generative AI, content verification, source evaluation, and responsible interpretation of digital materials. The study concludes that AI Education can strengthen adults’ ability to identify AI-generated content and support more informed engagement with digital information.
