Impact of Blue-Economy Education on Adults’ Identification of Livelihood Opportunities in Aquatic Resources
Abstract
Blue-Economy Education can play an important role in helping adults understand and identify livelihood opportunities associated with the sustainable use of aquatic and marine resources. The blue economy encompasses economic activities connected with oceans, seas, rivers, lakes, fisheries, aquaculture, aquatic transportation, tourism, and other water-related resources while emphasizing sustainable resource management. However, some adults may have limited awareness of the range of livelihood opportunities that aquatic resources can provide or the skills required to participate in them. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of Blue-Economy Education on adults’ identification of livelihood opportunities in aquatic resources and determine whether educational exposure can improve their awareness of sustainable water-based economic activities. Blue-Economy Education provides adults with knowledge about aquatic resources, sustainable resource utilization, water-based industries, and livelihood activities connected with aquatic environments. Through appropriate learning activities, adults can be introduced to opportunities in areas such as fisheries, aquaculture, fish processing, aquatic tourism, transportation, water-related services, and other sustainable activities. Education can also help learners understand the skills, resources, environmental considerations, and basic requirements associated with different livelihood opportunities. Such learning experiences can broaden adults’ awareness of how aquatic resources can support productive and sustainable economic activities. Adults’ identification of livelihood opportunities in aquatic resources refers to their ability to recognize different income-generating activities that can be developed from the responsible use of aquatic resources. This includes identifying suitable opportunities, understanding their basic requirements, and recognizing the skills and resources needed for participation. Blue-Economy Education can strengthen this ability by providing adults with practical information, occupational examples, resource-identification activities, and opportunities to explore different water-related economic activities. Improved identification can help adults recognize livelihood possibilities within aquatic environments while developing greater awareness of sustainable resource use. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate livelihood-opportunity identification assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to identify opportunities associated with aquatic resources. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Blue-Economy Education on adults’ identification of livelihood opportunities in aquatic resources. The study is expected to establish that Blue-Economy Education has a positive impact on adults’ identification of livelihood opportunities in aquatic resources. It is expected that adults exposed to relevant educational activities will demonstrate greater awareness of fisheries, aquaculture, aquatic tourism, fish processing, water-based services, and other sustainable livelihood possibilities. The study may further establish that educational exposure enables adults to better recognize the economic potential of aquatic resources while considering the importance of responsible and sustainable resource utilization. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners, programme developers, environmental educators, and livelihood-support organisations. Adult Education programmes can incorporate practical activities that expose adults to aquatic-resource-based occupations and sustainable livelihood practices. Facilitators can use resource-mapping exercises, occupational case studies, practical demonstrations, group discussions, and community-based learning activities to improve learners’ awareness of opportunities connected with aquatic resources. Such approaches can strengthen the economic relevance of Adult Education while promoting responsible engagement with aquatic environments. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, livelihood-support organisations, environmental organisations, aquatic-resource enterprises, and programme developers by providing insight into the contribution of education to adults’ identification of livelihood opportunities associated with aquatic resources. It is recommended that relevant Adult Education programmes provide structured learning opportunities covering blue-economy activities, aquatic resources, sustainable livelihoods, occupational skills, and responsible resource management. The study concludes that Blue-Economy Education can strengthen adults’ ability to identify livelihood opportunities in aquatic resources and support more informed participation in sustainable water-based economic activities.
