Impact of Budgeting Education on Adults’ Ability to Prioritize Household Expenses

Abstract

Budgeting education refers to learning activities that equip adults with knowledge and skills for planning, organizing, and allocating available financial resources. The ability to prioritize household expenses is important because households have different financial needs that must be arranged according to their level of importance and available resources. However, inadequate budgeting knowledge may make it difficult for adults to distinguish important household expenses from less urgent expenditures. Therefore, this study examines the impact of budgeting education on adults’ ability to prioritize household expenses. Budgeting education can expose adults to concepts such as income allocation, expenditure planning, essential and non-essential expenses, financial priorities, and resource allocation. Through practical budgeting exercises, household expenditure examples, demonstrations, and financial planning activities, adults can learn how to organize expenses according to their importance. Such activities can help learners understand how available household income can be allocated to different categories of expenditure. Adults’ ability to prioritize household expenses refers to their capacity to identify, classify, and arrange household expenditures according to their level of importance and urgency. Effective prioritization requires adults to consider available income, essential household needs, financial obligations, and other planned expenditures. Budgeting education can strengthen this ability by providing practical knowledge and opportunities for adults to apply budgeting principles to realistic household financial situations. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will consist of adults participating in selected adult education programmes, while an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a practical household-expense prioritization assessment designed to measure exposure to budgeting education and adults’ ability to prioritize household expenses. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that budgeting education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to prioritize household expenses. It is expected that adults exposed to relevant budgeting education will demonstrate improved ability to identify essential expenses, arrange household expenditures according to priority, allocate available resources appropriately, and make more informed household spending decisions. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education programmes. Facilitators can incorporate household budgeting exercises, expenditure-ranking activities, sample income-and-expense scenarios, and practical financial planning tasks into lessons. These activities can help adults apply budgeting concepts to realistic household situations and develop stronger skills for managing competing financial priorities. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult education facilitators, community learning centres, financial literacy organizations, households, and policymakers. Adults may benefit from improved ability to organize household expenditures according to priority, while facilitators can use the findings to strengthen practical budgeting instruction. Financial literacy organizations may also use the findings to develop learning activities that address everyday household financial challenges. The study will recommend that practical budgeting and household-expense prioritization activities be incorporated into relevant adult education programmes. Facilitators should use realistic household income and expenditure examples, prioritization exercises, and simple budgeting tools to strengthen adults’ practical financial skills. The study concludes that effective budgeting education can improve adults’ ability to prioritize household expenses and support more organized management of household financial resources.
