Impact of Career Information Education on Adults’ Occupational Mobility

Abstract

Career Information Education refers to the provision of relevant knowledge about occupations, employment opportunities, career requirements, and changing labour-market conditions, while occupational mobility refers to the ability of individuals to move from one occupation, job role, or level of employment to another. Access to appropriate career information is important for helping adults identify suitable occupational opportunities, acquire relevant skills, and make informed career decisions. However, inadequate access to reliable career information may limit adults’ awareness of available opportunities and reduce their ability to adapt to changing employment conditions. Therefore, this study aims to examine the impact of Career Information Education on adults’ occupational mobility. Career Information Education provides adults with information about different occupations, required qualifications, skill demands, career pathways, employment opportunities, and emerging areas of work. Through adult education programmes, career information can be delivered through counselling sessions, workshops, occupational guides, digital resources, and practical career-orientation activities. Such education enables adults to assess available career options, identify skills required for occupational advancement, and make informed decisions about employment and career changes. Occupational mobility describes the movement of individuals between occupations or employment positions and may involve changing jobs, moving into higher occupational roles, entering new areas of work, or shifting to occupations that provide better opportunities. Adults who possess adequate career information may be better positioned to recognize suitable employment opportunities, understand occupational requirements, and respond to changes in the labour market. Consequently, Career Information Education may contribute to improved occupational mobility by increasing adults’ awareness, decision-making ability, and preparedness for occupational transitions. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education programmes, from which a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to Career Information Education and indicators of occupational mobility. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the relationship between the variables. The study is expected to establish that Career Information Education has a significant positive impact on adults’ occupational mobility. It is expected that adults who receive relevant and timely career information will demonstrate greater awareness of occupational opportunities, improved understanding of career requirements, and greater readiness to change or advance their occupational positions. The study may also reveal that access to practical and updated career information helps adults respond more effectively to changing employment demands. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education by emphasizing the importance of integrating career information into adult learning programmes. Adult educators may use practical occupational information, career guidance activities, labour-market resources, and real-life employment examples to make learning more relevant to adults’ occupational needs. Such approaches can help learners connect educational experiences with available career opportunities and prepare them for occupational changes. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, career guidance practitioners, employers, policymakers, and providers of continuing education. Adult learners may gain improved awareness of career opportunities and pathways, while adult educators may obtain useful information for designing career-oriented learning activities. Policymakers and programme planners may also use the findings to strengthen career information services within adult education programmes and support adults seeking occupational advancement or transition. The study will recommend that adult education programmes incorporate regular and accessible Career Information Education activities that provide adults with current information about occupational opportunities and skill requirements. Adult educators should employ practical career guidance approaches and make use of relevant digital and community-based information resources. It will also be recommended that career information services be strengthened to support adults during occupational transitions. The study concludes that effective Career Information Education can play an important role in improving adults’ preparedness for occupational mobility and supporting their participation in changing labour-market opportunities.
