Impact of Community Health Education on Health-Seeking Behaviour among Adult Learners

Abstract

Community health education refers to organized educational activities designed to provide individuals with relevant knowledge and skills for preventing illness, recognizing health problems, and making appropriate use of available health services, while health-seeking behaviour refers to the actions individuals take when they perceive a health need, including seeking professional medical care, using preventive services, and obtaining reliable health information. Appropriate health-seeking behaviour is important for early detection, prevention, and effective management of health conditions. However, some adults may delay seeking professional care because of inadequate health knowledge, misconceptions, or limited awareness of available services. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of community health education on health-seeking behaviour among adult learners. Community health education involves planned learning activities delivered through community education programmes, health campaigns, workshops, outreach activities, and other educational settings. Such education may address disease prevention, healthy practices, recognition of warning signs, available healthcare services, preventive care, and appropriate responses to common health concerns. By presenting health information in understandable and practical forms, community health education can help adult learners develop the knowledge required to make informed decisions about their health. Health-seeking behaviour among adult learners involves decisions and actions relating to when, where, and how individuals seek healthcare services. Appropriate behaviour may include consulting qualified health professionals when necessary, attending health screenings, using preventive services, following prescribed treatment, and obtaining health information from reliable sources. Community health education may influence these behaviours by improving learners' understanding of health risks, available services, and the importance of timely professional care. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adult learners enrolled in selected adult education programmes within the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to community health education and health-seeking behaviour among the respondents. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that community health education has a positive impact on health-seeking behaviour among adult learners. It is anticipated that adult learners who receive relevant and understandable health education will demonstrate greater awareness of appropriate healthcare practices and show increased willingness to seek professional healthcare services when necessary. The study may also indicate that regular community-based health education can encourage more informed and timely healthcare decisions. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators can incorporate practical health education activities into adult learning programmes to improve learners' understanding of health services and appropriate healthcare practices. Participatory discussions, demonstrations, community outreach activities, and practical health information sessions may make health education more meaningful and applicable to adult learners' everyday lives. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, community health educators, healthcare providers, adult education institutions, and policymakers. Adult learners may gain better knowledge for making informed healthcare decisions, while educators may obtain useful information for developing relevant health education activities. Healthcare providers and programme planners may also use the findings to strengthen health education initiatives targeted at adult learners and communities. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate relevant community health education activities that address practical healthcare needs. Adult educators should present health information using simple, culturally appropriate, and learner-centred approaches. Community health educators and healthcare providers should also strengthen collaboration with adult education centres to provide regular health information and promote appropriate use of healthcare services. The study concludes that effective community health education can contribute to improved health-seeking behaviour among adult learners.
