Impact of Community Learning Centres on Lifelong Learning Participation among Adults

Abstract

Community learning centres are accessible educational facilities that provide adults with opportunities to acquire knowledge, develop skills, and participate in continuing learning activities, while lifelong learning participation refers to the continuous involvement of individuals in formal, non-formal, and informal learning throughout their lives. Lifelong learning is important for enabling adults to update their knowledge, develop new competencies, adapt to changing social and economic conditions, and pursue personal development. However, some adults have limited access to suitable learning opportunities after completing their initial education. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of community learning centres on lifelong learning participation among adults. Community learning centres provide flexible learning opportunities through literacy classes, vocational training, continuing education, skills development, workshops, seminars, and other community-based educational activities. They may provide learning resources, instructors, practical training, and spaces where adults can engage in educational activities close to their communities. By offering accessible and diverse learning opportunities, community learning centres can support adults who wish to continue learning beyond conventional educational institutions. Lifelong learning participation among adults involves continued engagement in educational activities for personal, occupational, social, and intellectual development. Adults may participate in literacy programmes, vocational courses, professional training, skills development activities, workshops, or other forms of continuing education. Community learning centres may therefore influence lifelong learning participation by providing accessible opportunities through which adults can continue acquiring knowledge and developing relevant skills at different stages of life. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected community learning centres within the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure access to and participation in community learning centre activities and lifelong learning participation among the respondents. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that community learning centres have a positive impact on lifelong learning participation among adults. It is anticipated that adults who have access to and participate in activities provided by community learning centres will demonstrate greater involvement in continuing education and other learning opportunities. The study may also establish that the accessibility and variety of programmes offered through community learning centres can encourage adults to continue learning beyond their initial educational experiences. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators should develop flexible and learner-centred programmes that respond to the different educational, occupational, and personal needs of adults. Community learning centres can use practical activities, workshops, discussions, demonstrations, and skills-based learning to encourage continuous participation. Flexible scheduling and relevant programme content may also make lifelong learning more attractive and accessible to adult learners. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, community learning centre administrators, educational institutions, community organizations, and policymakers. Adults may benefit from increased opportunities for continuous learning and skills development, while adult educators may gain useful information for improving community-based learning programmes. Educational institutions and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen community learning centres as accessible platforms for promoting lifelong learning among adults. The study recommends that community learning centres should provide diverse, affordable, and accessible learning programmes that reflect the changing needs of adults. Adult educators should adopt flexible teaching methods and practical learning activities that encourage continued participation. Community learning centres should also improve the availability of learning resources and collaborate with relevant organizations to expand learning opportunities for adults. The study concludes that well-supported community learning centres can contribute significantly to increased lifelong learning participation among adults.
