Impact of Community Learning on Adults’ Preservation of Traditional Storytelling Practices

Abstract

Traditional storytelling is an important means through which communities preserve their history, cultural values, beliefs, social experiences, language, and indigenous knowledge. The practice allows stories and cultural meanings to be transmitted from one generation to another through oral performance and shared community experiences. However, changing lifestyles and reduced participation in traditional cultural activities may create challenges for the continuity of storytelling practices. Community Learning provides opportunities for adults to participate in collective learning activities where cultural knowledge can be shared, practised, and transmitted. This study therefore examines the impact of Community Learning on adults’ preservation of traditional storytelling practices. Community Learning involves learning that takes place through interaction, participation, experience sharing, group activities, and the use of community knowledge and resources. In relation to traditional storytelling, community-based learning can provide adults with opportunities to listen to traditional narratives, participate in storytelling sessions, interact with experienced storytellers, and learn appropriate methods of presenting cultural stories. Such activities can also expose adults to traditional expressions, storytelling techniques, cultural symbols, historical accounts, and values contained within community narratives. Preservation of traditional storytelling practices involves maintaining the knowledge, techniques, narratives, language expressions, performance styles, and cultural meanings associated with traditional storytelling. Adults who participate actively in community learning may develop greater interest and competence in practising and transmitting traditional stories. Community Learning can provide a supportive environment where adults can document narratives, participate in storytelling events, share stories with younger generations, and encourage continued community interest in oral traditions. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Community Learning programmes and cultural learning activities, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate assessment designed to measure adults’ preservation of traditional storytelling practices. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Community Learning on adults’ preservation of traditional storytelling practices. The study is expected to establish that participation in Community Learning has a positive impact on adults’ preservation of traditional storytelling practices. Adults who participate in relevant community learning activities are expected to demonstrate greater knowledge of traditional narratives, stronger participation in storytelling activities, and increased willingness to share cultural stories with others. The study may also establish that regular storytelling sessions, cultural gatherings, and intergenerational learning activities can provide effective opportunities for maintaining storytelling traditions within communities. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community educators, cultural organizations, and heritage programme planners. Community Learning programmes may incorporate storytelling circles, oral-history activities, cultural exhibitions, intergenerational storytelling sessions, and community documentation projects. These activities can provide practical opportunities for adults to participate in cultural preservation while creating spaces for experienced storytellers and other knowledge holders to transfer their knowledge to wider community members. The study is expected to be significant to adult learners, traditional storytellers, cultural organizations, community educators, heritage practitioners, and stakeholders interested in preserving cultural heritage. It is recommended that Community Learning programmes provide regular opportunities for adults to participate in traditional storytelling and encourage interaction between generations. The study concludes that effective Community Learning can strengthen adults’ participation in preserving traditional storytelling practices by supporting the acquisition, practice, documentation, and transmission of culturally significant narratives.
