Impact of Community Learning Programmes on Social Interaction among Migrant Adults
Abstract
Community learning programmes refer to organized educational activities provided within community settings to promote knowledge acquisition, skills development, communication, and interaction among adult learners, while social interaction refers to the process through which individuals communicate, relate, cooperate, and exchange ideas with others. Migrant adults may experience limited social interaction because of unfamiliar environments, language difficulties, limited social networks, and barriers to communication. This study will examine the impact of community learning programmes on social interaction among migrant adults. Community learning programmes may include literacy classes, language learning, vocational training, workshops, discussion groups, cultural learning, and other educational activities organized within community settings. These programmes provide migrant adults with opportunities to learn in groups, communicate with educators and peers, share experiences, and develop practical skills. Regular participation in such programmes can create structured environments where migrant adults interact with people from different backgrounds and develop opportunities for meaningful communication. Social interaction among migrant adults involves communication with peers, educators, community members, and other individuals within their social environment. It includes sharing ideas, maintaining interpersonal relationships, cooperating with others, participating in group discussions, and engaging in joint activities. Community learning programmes may provide regular opportunities for these forms of interaction by bringing migrant adults together in supportive educational environments. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise migrant adults participating in selected community learning programmes in the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in community learning programmes and the level of social interaction among migrant adults. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that community learning programmes have a significant positive impact on social interaction among migrant adults. It is expected that migrant adults who participate regularly in community learning programmes will demonstrate greater communication, peer interaction, cooperation, relationship building, and engagement with others. The study may also establish that community-based learning environments provide migrant adults with valuable opportunities to develop meaningful social connections. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of migrant adults in community learning programmes. Adult educators should employ participatory teaching approaches such as group discussions, collaborative learning, peer activities, role-play, practical exercises, and experience-sharing sessions. These approaches can encourage communication and cooperation while making learning more relevant to the experiences and needs of migrant adults. The study will be beneficial to migrant adults, adult educators, community learning providers, migrant-support organizations, community development agencies, and policymakers. Migrant adults may benefit from increased opportunities for communication and relationship building, while adult educators may gain useful information for designing learning environments that encourage social interaction. Organizations supporting migrant communities may also use the findings to strengthen community-based educational programmes. The study will recommend that community learning providers develop accessible and inclusive programmes that encourage regular interaction among migrant adults. Adult educators should incorporate collaborative learning, group discussions, peer learning, practical activities, and experience sharing into their instructional practices. Community organizations should also provide supportive learning environments where migrant adults can communicate and cooperate with others. In conclusion, community learning programmes can provide migrant adults with meaningful educational and social opportunities that strengthen communication, cooperation, relationship building, and social interaction.
