Impact of Community Radio Learning on Adults’ Ability to Evaluate Broadcast Messages

Abstract

Community radio learning provides adults with opportunities to access information, develop knowledge, and strengthen their ability to engage critically with messages communicated through radio broadcasts. The ability to evaluate broadcast messages refers to the capacity to examine the content, purpose, accuracy, relevance, and credibility of information presented through radio programmes. With the increasing use of radio for educational, public-interest, commercial, and community communication, adults need appropriate skills to assess messages before accepting or acting upon them. This study will examine the impact of community radio learning on adults’ ability to evaluate broadcast messages. Community radio learning can expose adults to educational discussions, interviews, public-interest programmes, interactive sessions, news features, expert presentations, and other forms of broadcast content. These learning experiences can help participants identify the purpose of a message, distinguish factual claims from opinions, examine supporting information, and consider the credibility of the source. Interactive programmes can also encourage listeners to ask questions, compare viewpoints, and reflect on information presented through broadcasts. Such activities can make learning more accessible while developing adults’ critical engagement with radio messages. The ability to evaluate broadcast messages involves examining information carefully before accepting its claims or conclusions. Adults may need to identify the main message, recognize persuasive elements, assess the relevance of supporting information, distinguish facts from opinions, and consider whether the source appears credible. This ability is important because broadcast messages may influence attitudes, decisions, and everyday behaviour. Community radio learning may therefore strengthen adults’ evaluative abilities by providing opportunities to listen critically, discuss information, question claims, and compare different perspectives. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected community radio learning programmes and other Adult Education activities, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate broadcast-message evaluation assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to evaluate broadcast messages. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of community radio learning on adults’ ability to evaluate broadcast messages. The study is expected to establish that community radio learning has a positive impact on adults’ ability to evaluate broadcast messages. Adults who participate in relevant radio learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved ability to identify main ideas, examine supporting information, distinguish facts from opinions, recognize persuasive elements, and assess the credibility and relevance of broadcast content. The study is also expected to indicate that interactive discussions, interviews, question-and-answer sessions, and analytical listening activities can strengthen adults’ critical evaluation of broadcast messages. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, community radio educators, broadcasters, programme producers, and community development organizations. Community radio learning programmes should incorporate activities that encourage listeners to question, analyse, compare, and evaluate information rather than simply receive broadcast messages passively. Programme facilitators can also use guided discussions and audience participation to develop adults’ critical listening and information-evaluation abilities. The study will be significant to adult learners, community radio audiences, educators, broadcasters, and organizations involved in community information and lifelong learning. It will recommend that community radio learning programmes integrate critical-listening activities and opportunities for adults to evaluate broadcast content. The study will conclude that appropriately structured community radio learning can improve adults’ ability to assess broadcast messages and contribute to more informed and critical engagement with information received through radio.
