Impact of Concept-Mapping Activities on Conceptual Understanding among Adult Learners

Abstract

Concept-mapping activities are instructional activities that enable learners to organize concepts and show relationships among ideas in a visual and structured form, while conceptual understanding refers to the ability to comprehend the meaning, relationships, principles, and applications of concepts rather than merely recalling isolated facts. Strong conceptual understanding is important for adult learners because it can help them connect related ideas, explain concepts accurately, and apply knowledge to learning and practical situations. However, some adult learners may experience difficulty understanding relationships among concepts when learning is presented mainly through conventional methods. Therefore, this study aims to examine the impact of concept-mapping activities on conceptual understanding among adult learners. Concept-mapping activities involve identifying key concepts, arranging them in an organized structure, and establishing meaningful relationships between related ideas. Learners may construct maps individually or collaboratively by connecting major concepts with supporting ideas and indicating relationships among them. Through these activities, adult learners can organize information in a structured manner, identify connections between concepts, and develop a clearer representation of the subject matter being studied. Conceptual understanding involves grasping the meaning of concepts, recognizing relationships among related ideas, explaining principles, distinguishing between related concepts, and applying understanding to appropriate situations. Adult learners with strong conceptual understanding are better positioned to move beyond memorization and develop meaningful connections between different areas of knowledge. Concept-mapping activities can support conceptual understanding by helping learners organize ideas, visualize relationships, identify connections, and examine how different concepts contribute to a broader area of knowledge. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners enrolled in selected adult education programmes within the study area. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure, while data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and appropriate conceptual-understanding assessment items designed to measure exposure to concept-mapping activities and learners’ conceptual understanding. The data collected will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, with the relevant hypothesis tested at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that concept-mapping activities have a positive impact on conceptual understanding among adult learners. Adult learners who participate in concept-mapping activities are expected to demonstrate greater ability to explain concepts, recognize relationships among ideas, distinguish related concepts, and apply conceptual knowledge to relevant learning situations. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators may incorporate concept mapping into instructional activities to help learners organize information and visualize relationships among ideas. Guided construction of concept maps, group mapping exercises, and review of completed maps may provide learners with opportunities to examine the connections between concepts and strengthen their understanding of instructional content. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, programme coordinators, educational planners, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from improved understanding of complex concepts, while adult educators may gain an effective instructional approach for presenting interconnected ideas. Programme coordinators and policymakers may also use the findings to encourage learner-centred instructional strategies that support deeper understanding in adult education programmes. The study will recommend that adult education programmes encourage the use of concept-mapping activities as part of instructional practice, particularly when teaching topics containing several related concepts. Adult educators should guide learners in identifying major concepts, arranging related ideas, and establishing meaningful connections among them. The study will conclude that appropriate use of concept-mapping activities can strengthen conceptual understanding among adult learners and promote more organized and meaningful learning.
