Impact of Consumer Literacy Education on Adults’ Ability to Compare Product Information
Abstract
Consumer literacy education refers to the process of equipping adults with knowledge and skills needed to understand, interpret, and assess information provided about consumer goods and services, while the ability to compare product information refers to the capacity of adults to examine information from different products and identify similarities, differences, advantages, limitations, prices, quality indicators, and other relevant features before making purchasing decisions. Inadequate ability to compare product information may expose adults to unsuitable products, misleading claims, and unnecessary expenditure. This study will examine the impact of consumer literacy education on adults’ ability to compare product information, with the purpose of determining whether consumer literacy education improves adults’ capacity to make meaningful comparisons between products. Consumer literacy education provides adults with practical knowledge about product labels, prices, quality indicators, warranties, advertisements, product descriptions, and other forms of consumer information. Through consumer literacy education, adults can learn how to identify relevant details, interpret product descriptions, recognise important differences, and organise information when assessing alternative products. Such knowledge can help adults approach purchasing information more carefully and systematically. The ability to compare product information involves examining information from two or more products and identifying differences and similarities in areas such as price, quantity, quality, features, usage instructions, durability, and other relevant characteristics. Effective comparison requires adults to identify important information and assess products using appropriate criteria rather than relying solely on advertisements or assumptions. Consumer literacy education can provide the knowledge and practical skills required to perform these comparisons effectively. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adults who participate in selected consumer literacy education programmes. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to consumer literacy education and adults’ ability to compare product information. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that consumer literacy education has a significant impact on adults’ ability to compare product information. It is expected that adults with greater exposure to consumer literacy education will demonstrate stronger abilities to identify relevant product details, compare prices and features, assess quality information, and distinguish important differences between products. The study may further establish that consumer literacy education improves adults’ capacity to use product information systematically before making purchasing decisions. The findings will have implications for adult education practice and consumer literacy programmes. Adult educators may incorporate practical comparison exercises into consumer literacy lessons by providing learners with product labels, advertisements, price lists, product descriptions, and other realistic materials. These activities can help adults develop practical skills for identifying relevant information and comparing alternative products in everyday purchasing situations. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, consumer literacy educators, consumer protection organisations, educational planners, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from improved skills for evaluating alternative products and making informed purchasing choices. Adult educators may gain useful information for developing practical consumer literacy activities, while consumer protection organisations and policymakers may use the findings to strengthen educational initiatives aimed at improving consumer knowledge and decision-making. The study will recommend that consumer literacy education programmes should incorporate practical activities that require adults to compare information from different products. Adult educators should emphasise the interpretation of product labels, prices, features, quality indicators, warranties, and other relevant product information. Realistic examples of commonly purchased goods should be used to strengthen practical learning and improve adults’ ability to make meaningful product comparisons. The study will conclude that consumer literacy education can improve adults’ ability to compare product information and should be strengthened as an important component of practical adult education.
