Impact of Cooperative Leadership Education on Adults’ Ability to Perform Group Leadership Roles

Abstract

Cooperative Leadership Education refers to structured learning experiences that equip adults with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to lead groups through shared responsibility, participation, communication, and collective decision-making. Adults’ ability to perform group leadership roles is important for effective coordination, teamwork, accountability, and achievement of common objectives in community and organizational settings. However, some adults may experience difficulties in coordinating group activities, assigning responsibilities, resolving disagreements, and making inclusive decisions. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of Cooperative Leadership Education on adults’ ability to perform group leadership roles. Cooperative Leadership Education involves learning activities that promote shared leadership, active participation, collaborative decision-making, responsibility sharing, communication, and group coordination. Through discussions, practical exercises, role-playing, group projects, and problem-solving activities, adults can develop practical competencies needed to guide groups effectively. Such education also encourages respect for diverse opinions, collective responsibility, and participatory approaches to leadership, enabling learners to understand how effective leadership can be exercised within cooperative group settings. Adults’ ability to perform group leadership roles involves their capacity to coordinate members, assign tasks, communicate instructions, facilitate discussions, encourage participation, manage group resources, and guide members toward agreed objectives. Effective performance of these roles requires practical leadership competence and an understanding of cooperative principles. Cooperative Leadership Education may strengthen these abilities by providing adults with opportunities to practise leadership tasks, receive feedback, work collaboratively, and apply leadership knowledge to realistic group situations. The study will adopt a quantitative research design, specifically a survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected adult education and community-based learning programmes. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure participants’ exposure to Cooperative Leadership Education and their ability to perform group leadership roles. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures, while the data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and relevant inferential statistical techniques. The study is expected to establish that Cooperative Leadership Education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to perform group leadership roles. Adults who receive structured cooperative leadership education are expected to demonstrate improved abilities in coordinating group activities, assigning responsibilities, encouraging participation, communicating effectively, and facilitating collective decisions. The study may also indicate that practical and participatory leadership learning provides adults with greater confidence and competence in carrying out responsibilities associated with group leadership. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of Adult Education. Adult educators may need to place greater emphasis on practical leadership activities rather than relying mainly on theoretical instruction. The use of group projects, simulations, role-playing, collaborative tasks, leadership exercises, and reflective activities can provide adults with opportunities to practise leadership competencies. Such approaches can make leadership education more relevant to the real-life responsibilities adults encounter in community groups, cooperatives, associations, and other collective settings. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, community organizations, cooperative groups, non-governmental organizations, and programme administrators. Adult learners may benefit from improved leadership competence and greater confidence in undertaking group responsibilities. Adult educators may gain useful information for designing leadership-focused learning programmes, while community and cooperative organizations may benefit from members who are better prepared to coordinate activities and promote collective participation. Programme administrators may also use the findings to strengthen leadership development components within adult education programmes. The study recommends that Cooperative Leadership Education should be incorporated into relevant adult learning programmes through practical, participatory, and experience-based activities. Adult education providers should provide opportunities for learners to practise group coordination, responsibility sharing, communication, and collective decision-making. Regular leadership exercises and feedback should also be encouraged to strengthen practical competence. The study concludes that effective Cooperative Leadership Education can contribute to improving adults’ capacity to perform group leadership roles and participate more effectively in collective activities.
