Impact of Creative Education on Adults’ Understanding of Poster Design Principles

Abstract

Poster design principles refer to the basic guidelines used to organize text, images, colours, shapes, spacing, and other visual elements to create clear, attractive, and effective posters. Creative education can provide adults with relevant knowledge and practical skills for understanding and applying these principles in the production of effective visual materials. Adequate understanding of poster design is important for effective communication, advertising, public information, educational messaging, and creative activities. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of creative education on adults’ understanding of poster design principles. Creative education can expose adults to poster design principles through practical demonstrations, visual analysis, guided design exercises, group projects, digital design activities, and supervised practice. These learning activities can introduce participants to principles such as balance, alignment, contrast, hierarchy, proximity, colour coordination, typography, spacing, and visual emphasis. Learners can also examine existing posters and practise identifying how different design elements contribute to clarity and visual appeal. Practical design projects can help adults apply these principles when creating their own posters. Adults’ understanding of poster design principles refers to their ability to identify, explain, and appropriately apply basic guidelines for organizing visual elements in poster design. This includes understanding the relationship between typography, colour, images, spacing, alignment, balance, contrast, and visual hierarchy. Improved understanding can enable adults to make more deliberate design decisions and produce posters that communicate information effectively to intended audiences. Creative education is therefore expected to strengthen this understanding through structured instruction, visual analysis, experimentation, and practical design activities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected creative education, Adult Education, digital media, and vocational learning programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate poster-design principles assessment designed to measure adults’ understanding of the subject. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of creative education on adults’ understanding of poster design principles. The study is expected to establish that creative education has a positive impact on adults’ understanding of poster design principles. Adults exposed to relevant creative learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of balance, alignment, contrast, typography, colour coordination, spacing, visual hierarchy, and effective arrangement of design elements. The study may also indicate that practical design exercises and analysis of existing posters are useful for helping adults connect theoretical principles with actual design decisions. Such findings would demonstrate the value of creative education in developing practical visual communication knowledge. The study is significant because improved understanding of poster design principles can support effective visual communication, digital content creation, advertising, public information, educational messaging, and creative livelihood opportunities. It is recommended that creative education programmes incorporate practical poster-design projects, visual demonstrations, design analysis, digital design exercises, and constructive feedback. Educators should also provide opportunities for adults to experiment with different design elements while applying established principles of effective visual communication. The study concludes that creative education can serve as an important means of improving adults’ understanding of poster design principles and strengthening their practical creative skills.
