Impact of Cultural Learning Programmes on Adults’ Participation in Traditional Craft Activities
Abstract
Traditional craft activities represent an important part of cultural heritage and provide opportunities for communities to preserve indigenous skills, artistic knowledge, cultural expressions, and traditional methods of production. These activities may include weaving, pottery, basketry, carving, beadwork, textile production, and other forms of craft practiced within communities. Cultural Learning Programmes provide structured opportunities for adults to acquire cultural knowledge and develop practical skills through demonstrations, workshops, group activities, and interaction with experienced craft practitioners. This study therefore examines the impact of Cultural Learning Programmes on adults’ participation in traditional craft activities. Cultural Learning Programmes can expose adults to traditional craft techniques, materials, designs, production processes, and the cultural meanings associated with different crafts. Through practical demonstrations, workshops, cultural exhibitions, and hands-on activities, adults can observe and practise traditional craft methods. Interaction with experienced artisans and other cultural knowledge holders can also provide opportunities for adults to learn skills that may not be easily acquired through formal classroom instruction. Such programmes can therefore create a supportive environment for adults to develop greater interest in traditional craft activities. Participation in traditional craft activities involves adults’ willingness and ability to engage in activities such as learning craft techniques, producing traditional items, attending craft workshops, supporting local artisans, and taking part in cultural craft events. Active participation can contribute to the preservation and transmission of traditional skills across generations. Cultural Learning Programmes may encourage such participation by making traditional crafts more accessible, practical, and relevant to adults while creating opportunities for continuous interaction with cultural practitioners. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Cultural Learning Programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate participation assessment designed to measure adults’ participation in traditional craft activities. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Cultural Learning Programmes on adults’ participation in traditional craft activities. The study is expected to establish that participation in Cultural Learning Programmes has a positive impact on adults’ participation in traditional craft activities. Adults who are exposed to relevant cultural learning experiences are expected to demonstrate greater interest in traditional crafts and increased involvement in practical craft activities, workshops, demonstrations, and cultural events. The study may also establish that hands-on learning and direct interaction with experienced craft practitioners can provide effective opportunities for encouraging sustained adult participation in traditional craft practices. The findings are expected to have implications for Cultural Education practitioners, Adult Education facilitators, cultural organizations, traditional craft practitioners, and programme planners. Cultural Learning Programmes may incorporate practical workshops, craft demonstrations, exhibitions, apprenticeship-style activities, and opportunities for adults to work directly with experienced artisans. These approaches can make cultural learning more participatory while providing adults with opportunities to develop practical knowledge and maintain connections with traditional craft practices. The study is expected to be significant to adult learners, traditional artisans, cultural organizations, community educators, heritage practitioners, and stakeholders interested in cultural preservation. It is recommended that Cultural Learning Programmes provide accessible and practical opportunities for adults to engage in traditional craft activities and interact with experienced practitioners. The study concludes that well-designed Cultural Learning Programmes can strengthen adults’ participation in traditional craft activities and contribute to the preservation, practice, and transmission of traditional cultural skills.
