Impact of Disability-Friendly Learning Centres on Adult Education Participation
Abstract
Disability-friendly learning centres are educational facilities designed to accommodate the physical, instructional, communication, and learning needs of adults with disabilities, while adult education participation refers to the extent to which adults attend, engage in, and remain involved in educational programmes. Adults with disabilities may face barriers such as inaccessible buildings, unsuitable learning materials, inadequate support services, and limited instructional accommodations, which can discourage their participation in adult education. Disability-friendly learning centres can help reduce these barriers by providing accessible facilities and supportive learning conditions. Therefore, this study will examine the impact of disability-friendly learning centres on adult education participation. Disability-friendly learning centres may provide features such as accessible entrances, appropriate classroom arrangements, suitable furniture, accessible sanitation facilities, adapted learning materials, assistive technologies, and trained support personnel. These provisions can make educational environments more suitable for adults with different physical and learning needs. When learning centres are designed to accommodate learners with disabilities, they can reduce physical and instructional barriers that may prevent adults from attending and participating effectively in educational programmes. Adult education participation involves regular attendance, involvement in classroom activities, interaction with educators and other learners, completion of learning tasks, and continued engagement in educational programmes. Adults with disabilities may be more willing to participate when learning centres provide facilities and support that enable them to learn comfortably and independently. Disability-friendly learning centres can therefore create an enabling environment that encourages adults with disabilities to attend educational programmes and participate actively in learning activities. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise adult learners with disabilities participating in selected adult education programmes and learning centres. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure the availability of disability-friendly facilities and participation in adult education programmes. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that disability-friendly learning centres have a significant positive impact on adult education participation. It is expected that adults with disabilities who have access to accessible facilities, adapted learning resources, assistive technologies, and appropriate support services will demonstrate higher levels of attendance, engagement, and continued participation. The findings may further show that improving the accessibility of learning centres can reduce environmental barriers that discourage adults with disabilities from participating in education. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning by emphasizing the importance of creating accessible and supportive educational environments for adults with disabilities. Adult educators may need to use adapted instructional materials, flexible teaching methods, assistive technologies, and participatory learning activities that accommodate diverse abilities. The physical organization of learning spaces should also support learners’ movement, comfort, independence, and interaction during educational activities. The study will be beneficial to adults with disabilities, adult educators, adult education centres, educational administrators, disability support organizations, community learning providers, and policymakers. Adults with disabilities may benefit from improved educational environments that encourage their participation, while adult educators may gain useful information for identifying and addressing facility-related barriers. Educational administrators and policymakers may also use the findings to improve infrastructure, accessibility standards, and support services within adult education centres. The study recommends that adult education providers should improve learning centres by providing accessible buildings, suitable furniture, adapted instructional resources, assistive technologies, accessible sanitation facilities, and appropriate learner support services. Educational administrators should regularly assess learning environments to identify and remove barriers that may limit participation among adults with disabilities. It is concluded that disability-friendly learning centres can contribute significantly to increased adult education participation by creating accessible, supportive, and inclusive environments for learners with disabilities.
