Impact of Disaster Preparedness Education on Household Emergency Planning among Adults

Abstract

Disaster preparedness education refers to structured learning that provides adults with knowledge and skills for understanding disaster risks and taking appropriate measures before emergencies occur, while household emergency planning refers to the process of developing organized arrangements for responding to potential emergencies within the home. Effective household emergency planning is important because families may need to make timely decisions concerning communication, evacuation, emergency supplies, important documents, and the protection of household members during disasters. However, inadequate knowledge of preparedness procedures may limit adults’ ability to develop effective emergency plans. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of disaster preparedness education on household emergency planning among adults. Disaster preparedness education provides adults with information about potential hazards, warning systems, emergency supplies, evacuation arrangements, communication procedures, emergency contacts, and other measures that can be undertaken before a disaster occurs. Through adult education programmes, workshops, community learning activities, demonstrations, and practical preparedness exercises, adults can acquire knowledge about planning for different emergency situations. These educational experiences can help learners understand the importance of advance preparation and provide practical guidance for organizing household emergency arrangements. Household emergency planning among adults refers to adults’ ability to develop and maintain practical arrangements for managing emergencies that may affect their households. This may include identifying emergency contacts, determining evacuation arrangements, preparing essential supplies, safeguarding important documents, establishing household communication procedures, and making arrangements for household members who may require additional assistance. Disaster preparedness education may improve household emergency planning by providing adults with relevant knowledge and practical guidance on organizing these measures before emergencies occur. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will consist of adults participating in selected adult education or disaster preparedness programmes within the study area. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure exposure to disaster preparedness education and the extent of household emergency planning among adults. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of disaster preparedness education on household emergency planning among adults. The study is expected to establish that disaster preparedness education has a positive impact on household emergency planning among adults. Adults with greater exposure to disaster preparedness education are expected to demonstrate stronger household planning practices, including preparation of emergency supplies, identification of emergency contacts, development of communication arrangements, and consideration of evacuation procedures. The study may also identify specific components of household emergency planning where adults require additional educational support. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators can incorporate practical household emergency planning activities into disaster preparedness lessons through scenario-based exercises, demonstrations, planning templates, group discussions, and practical simulations. These approaches can help adults translate disaster preparedness knowledge into concrete household plans. Learning activities can also encourage adults to consider the specific needs and circumstances of different household members when developing emergency arrangements. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, community education providers, emergency management organizations, households, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from improved knowledge and practical skills for organizing household emergency plans, while adult educators may gain useful information for developing relevant preparedness education. Emergency management organizations and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen community-based disaster preparedness education and encourage greater household readiness for emergencies. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate practical household emergency planning into disaster preparedness education. Adult educators should use realistic scenarios, planning exercises, demonstrations, and accessible educational materials to help adults develop appropriate emergency arrangements. Collaboration between adult education providers and relevant emergency management organizations should also be encouraged to ensure that learners receive accurate and practical preparedness information. The study concludes that disaster preparedness education can contribute to improved household emergency planning among adults by providing the knowledge and practical skills needed to organize appropriate measures before emergencies occur.
