Impact of Entrepreneurship Education on Adults’ Ability to Identify Customer Needs

Abstract

Entrepreneurship education refers to structured learning that develops the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to recognize opportunities, understand markets, and create or manage business ventures. Adults’ ability to identify customer needs involves their capacity to recognize what potential or existing customers require, value, prefer, or expect from a product or service. Poor understanding of customer needs may lead entrepreneurs to offer products or services that do not adequately address market demands. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of entrepreneurship education on adults’ ability to identify customer needs. Entrepreneurship education introduces adults to fundamental concepts involved in understanding customers and markets. These may include customer observation, market research, information gathering, customer feedback, identification of problems, product or service evaluation, and recognition of changing consumer preferences. Through case studies, practical exercises, group discussions, business scenarios, and market-analysis activities, learners can examine how entrepreneurs gather information about customers and use it to understand their needs. Such learning can provide adults with practical approaches for identifying relevant customer requirements. Adults’ ability to identify customer needs involves recognizing problems customers experience, understanding their preferences, identifying gaps in existing products or services, and interpreting information obtained from customer interactions. Entrepreneurship education can strengthen this ability by exposing adults to systematic methods of observing, questioning, and analyzing customer information. Improved understanding of entrepreneurial and market concepts may therefore enable adults to identify customer needs more accurately and use such information when developing or improving business offerings. The study will adopt a quasi-experimental research design to determine the impact of entrepreneurship education on adults’ ability to identify customer needs. The population will consist of selected adult learners, from whom an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a customer-needs identification assessment administered before and after exposure to the entrepreneurship education programme. The data obtained will be analyzed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine changes in participants’ abilities. The study is expected to establish that adults exposed to entrepreneurship education demonstrate improved ability to identify customer needs compared with their performance before the educational intervention. Participants are expected to show greater ability to recognize customer problems, interpret customer feedback, identify preferences, and distinguish unmet needs from general assumptions about consumers. The findings may indicate that entrepreneurship education can strengthen adults’ practical capacity to gather and interpret customer information for business purposes. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators can use customer scenarios, market-observation exercises, case studies, interviews, surveys, and practical business activities to help learners develop customer-needs identification skills. Learners can be encouraged to examine real or simulated customer situations and identify the specific needs that products or services could address. Feedback and guided analysis may further improve their ability to distinguish evidence-based customer needs from assumptions. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, aspiring entrepreneurs, small-business operators, community organizations, and institutions providing entrepreneurship education. Adults may acquire practical skills for understanding customers and identifying opportunities to provide relevant products or services. Educators may also gain useful information for designing more practical entrepreneurship programmes, while existing and prospective entrepreneurs may benefit from stronger customer-oriented decision-making skills. The study recommends that adult education programmes should incorporate entrepreneurship education through customer-needs identification exercises, market scenarios, case studies, interviews, surveys, and practical business projects. Adult educators should emphasize customer observation, information gathering, feedback analysis, problem identification, and recognition of unmet needs. Learners should also be given opportunities to apply these skills to realistic business situations and evaluate the information they obtain. The study concludes that entrepreneurship education has the potential to improve adults’ ability to identify customer needs and strengthen their preparedness for customer-oriented entrepreneurial activities.
