Impact of Family Education Programmes on Parent Participation in Community Childcare Activities

Abstract

Family education programmes refer to organized educational activities designed to provide parents and family members with knowledge, skills, and information that support effective family functioning and child development, while parent participation in community childcare activities refers to parents’ involvement in organized activities that support the care, development, protection, and learning of children within community settings. Family education can help parents understand their responsibilities and develop skills for contributing to childcare initiatives. However, limited parental knowledge and awareness may affect their involvement in community childcare activities. Therefore, this study examines the impact of family education programmes on parent participation in community childcare activities. Family education programmes may include parenting education, family life education, child development sessions, parent workshops, discussion groups, and community-based educational activities. These programmes can provide parents with information about children’s developmental needs, effective caregiving practices, communication, health, safety, and early learning. They may also create opportunities for parents to exchange experiences and learn practical approaches to supporting children. Through these learning experiences, parents may develop greater confidence and understanding of their roles in childcare activities within their communities. Parent participation in community childcare activities involves parents’ involvement in activities such as community childcare meetings, child development programmes, early learning support activities, childcare awareness events, and other organized initiatives designed to support children. Participation may include attending activities, contributing ideas, assisting with programmes, supporting childcare initiatives, and collaborating with other community members. Family education programmes may influence such participation by improving parents’ knowledge, awareness, confidence, and understanding of community childcare responsibilities. Consequently, parents who receive relevant family education may be more willing to participate in community childcare activities. The study will adopt a correlational research design. The population will comprise parents who have participated in or have access to selected family education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure family education programmes and parent participation in community childcare activities. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and an appropriate inferential statistical technique to determine the impact of family education programmes on parent participation. The study is expected to establish that family education programmes have a significant impact on parent participation in community childcare activities. Parents with greater exposure to family education programmes are expected to demonstrate higher levels of involvement in organized childcare activities within their communities. The findings are also expected to indicate that improved knowledge of child development, caregiving, and parental responsibilities can encourage parents to contribute more actively to community childcare initiatives. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of adults. Adult education facilitators may need to design family education programmes that provide parents with practical knowledge and skills relevant to community childcare. Discussions, demonstrations, case studies, and experience-sharing activities can help parents understand how they can contribute effectively to childcare initiatives. Facilitators may also encourage parents to apply the knowledge acquired from family education to their involvement in organized community childcare activities. The study will be beneficial to parents, adult education facilitators, childcare providers, community organizations, family education programme administrators, and education planners. Parents may benefit from improved knowledge and confidence in supporting community childcare activities. Facilitators may gain insight into how family education can encourage parental involvement, while childcare providers and community organizations may benefit from increased parental support for childcare initiatives. Education planners may also use the findings to strengthen family-oriented adult education programmes. The study recommends that adult education institutions and community organizations should provide accessible family education programmes that address parents’ childcare needs. Facilitators should incorporate practical discussions, child development education, demonstrations, and experience-sharing activities into family education programmes. Community organizations should also create suitable opportunities for parents to apply their knowledge through organized childcare activities. In conclusion, effective family education programmes can strengthen parents’ knowledge and confidence and encourage greater participation in community childcare activities.
