Impact of First Aid Education on Adults’ Knowledge of Emergency Assistance Principles
Abstract
First aid education provides adults with practical knowledge and skills that can support appropriate responses during emergencies before professional medical assistance becomes available. Emergency assistance principles refer to the basic guidelines that inform safe and appropriate assistance to a person who is injured or suddenly ill, including assessing the situation, protecting oneself and others from danger, seeking appropriate help, and providing suitable immediate assistance. Inadequate knowledge of these principles may result in inappropriate responses or delays in obtaining professional assistance. This study will examine the impact of first aid education on adults’ knowledge of emergency assistance principles. First aid education can provide adults with learning experiences through demonstrations, practical exercises, simulations, discussions, visual materials, and scenario-based activities. These activities can introduce learners to basic emergency assessment, personal safety, appropriate communication, emergency assistance procedures, and the importance of seeking professional medical support when necessary. Simulated emergency situations can enable adults to practise identifying appropriate responses while receiving guidance and feedback from facilitators. Such practical learning experiences can make emergency assistance principles easier to understand and apply. Knowledge of emergency assistance principles involves adults’ understanding of how to respond appropriately and safely when confronted with an emergency situation. It includes recognizing immediate dangers, assessing the situation before providing assistance, seeking appropriate emergency support, communicating relevant information, and understanding the limits of basic first aid assistance. Adequate knowledge can help adults make more responsible decisions during emergencies and reduce the likelihood of unsafe or inappropriate responses. First aid education may therefore strengthen this knowledge by combining theoretical information with practical demonstrations and realistic scenarios. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected first aid, Adult Education, community health, and safety education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate knowledge assessment designed to measure participants’ knowledge of emergency assistance principles. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of first aid education on adults’ knowledge of emergency assistance principles. The study is expected to establish that first aid education has a positive impact on adults’ knowledge of emergency assistance principles. Adults exposed to structured first aid education are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of emergency assessment, personal safety, appropriate help-seeking, communication during emergencies, and the boundaries of basic assistance. The study is also expected to indicate that practical demonstrations, simulations, and scenario-based activities can strengthen adults’ ability to recognize appropriate emergency assistance principles. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, first aid instructors, community educators, workplace safety trainers, and programme developers. First aid education programmes should incorporate practical scenarios, demonstrations, and guided exercises that allow adults to apply emergency assistance principles in realistic situations. Facilitators should also emphasize personal safety, appropriate help-seeking, clear communication, and the importance of obtaining professional medical assistance when an emergency exceeds the individual’s level of training. The study will be significant to adult learners, community members, workplace participants, educators, and organizations interested in emergency preparedness and safety education. It will recommend that first aid education programmes provide accessible and practical learning experiences that develop adults’ knowledge of emergency assistance principles. The study will conclude that appropriately structured first aid education can improve adults’ knowledge of safe emergency assistance and strengthen their preparedness to respond responsibly while professional help is being obtained.
