Impact of Functional Writing Education on Adults’ Ability to Complete Official Forms

Abstract

Functional writing education refers to organized learning experiences that develop adults’ ability to use writing for practical purposes, while the ability to complete official forms refers to the capacity to accurately provide required information, follow instructions, and enter relevant details in designated sections of formal documents. The ability to complete official forms correctly is important for accessing employment, education, financial services, public programmes, healthcare services, and other institutional opportunities. However, some adults may encounter difficulties in understanding form instructions, identifying required information, and entering responses accurately in appropriate sections. This study therefore aims to examine the impact of functional writing education on adults’ ability to complete official forms. Functional writing education provides adults with practical writing experiences that focus on applying literacy skills to everyday tasks and institutional requirements. In relation to completing official forms, instruction can expose learners to identifying different sections of a form, interpreting written instructions, providing personal and relevant information, completing dates and other required details, and reviewing entries for completeness and accuracy. Through demonstrations, sample forms, guided exercises, and practical assignments, adults can develop the ability to apply writing skills to real-life documentation tasks. The ability to complete official forms involves several competencies, including reading and interpreting instructions, identifying required fields, selecting appropriate information, entering responses accurately, maintaining consistency in information provided, and checking completed forms before submission. Adults with these skills are better able to provide information in the appropriate sections and reduce errors or omissions in official documentation. Functional writing education can strengthen these competencies by providing learners with repeated opportunities to practise completing different types of forms under guided instruction. The study will adopt a suitable research design to investigate the impact of functional writing education on adults’ ability to complete official forms. The population will comprise selected adult learners, from whom an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured official-form completion assessment designed to evaluate participants’ ability to interpret instructions and provide required information accurately. The data obtained will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of functional writing education on the identified ability. The study is expected to establish that functional writing education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to complete official forms. Adults exposed to relevant learning experiences are expected to demonstrate improved abilities in interpreting form instructions, identifying required information, entering responses correctly, completing different sections, and reviewing forms for errors or omissions. The study is also expected to indicate that practical exercises involving realistic forms can improve adults’ confidence and accuracy when completing official documents. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of Adult Education. Adult educators can incorporate practical form-completion activities into functional writing programmes to strengthen learners’ ability to apply literacy skills to institutional and everyday tasks. Sample employment forms, registration forms, service-request forms, application forms, and other appropriate documents can be used during lessons to provide realistic practice. Demonstrations, guided exercises, peer activities, and corrective feedback can further support learners’ development of accurate form-completion skills. The study will be beneficial to adult learners, adult educators, community organizations, employers, educational institutions, and service-providing agencies. Adult learners may become more capable of completing official documents independently and accurately, while educators may gain practical approaches for teaching functional writing skills. Organizations and service providers may also benefit from adults who can provide complete and accurate information when accessing programmes, services, employment opportunities, or institutional processes. The study recommends that functional writing education programmes should include regular practical exercises on completing different types of official forms. Adult educators should teach learners how to interpret instructions, identify required fields, provide appropriate information, check entries, and correct errors before submission. Realistic examples and guided practice should be used to reinforce learning and develop practical competence. The study concludes that functional writing education can significantly improve adults’ ability to complete official forms and strengthen their capacity to participate effectively in institutional and everyday activities.
