Impact of Green-Jobs Education on Adults’ Ability to Identify Emerging Sustainable Occupations

Abstract

Green-Jobs Education can play an important role in preparing adults to understand changing employment opportunities associated with environmental sustainability and the transition toward more sustainable economic activities. Emerging sustainable occupations are creating new possibilities in areas such as renewable energy, waste management, sustainable agriculture, environmental services, resource efficiency, and other environmentally responsible activities. However, some adults may have limited awareness of these occupations or difficulty recognizing the skills and responsibilities associated with them. This study therefore seeks to examine the impact of Green-Jobs Education on adults’ ability to identify emerging sustainable occupations and determine whether educational exposure can improve their awareness of changing employment opportunities. Green-Jobs Education provides adults with knowledge about green employment, sustainable economic activities, environmental practices, and the occupational roles that contribute to environmental sustainability. Through appropriate learning activities, adults can be introduced to different categories of green jobs and the skills associated with them. Education can also expose learners to emerging occupational areas, workplace responsibilities, relevant competencies, and changing labour-market demands associated with sustainable development. Such learning experiences can help adults connect environmental concerns with evolving employment opportunities and recognize the importance of acquiring relevant skills. Adults’ ability to identify emerging sustainable occupations refers to their capacity to recognize different occupations that contribute to environmental sustainability and distinguish them from conventional occupational roles. This ability involves identifying the nature of sustainable occupations, understanding their major functions, and recognizing the skills or competencies required for participation. Green-Jobs Education can strengthen this ability by providing structured information, occupational examples, career exploration activities, and opportunities for adults to examine emerging employment trends. Improved identification can help adults make more informed decisions concerning career exploration and skills development. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate occupational-identification assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to identify emerging sustainable occupations. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Green-Jobs Education on adults’ ability to identify emerging sustainable occupations. The study is expected to establish that Green-Jobs Education has a positive impact on adults’ ability to identify emerging sustainable occupations. It is expected that adults exposed to relevant educational activities will demonstrate greater awareness of green occupations, their functions, associated competencies, and the relationship between sustainability and employment. The study may further establish that educational exposure enables adults to recognize emerging occupational opportunities that may otherwise be overlooked and encourages them to consider relevant skills development for participation in sustainable economic activities. The findings are expected to have implications for Adult Education practitioners, programme developers, career facilitators, and skills-training providers. Adult Education programmes can incorporate practical activities that expose adults to emerging green occupations and the skills required within sustainable industries. Facilitators can use occupational case studies, career exploration exercises, environmental projects, skills-mapping activities, and discussions of changing employment trends to strengthen learners’ awareness. Such approaches can make Adult Education more responsive to environmental changes and emerging labour-market opportunities. The study will be significant to adult learners, Adult Education practitioners, employers, skills-training organisations, career development practitioners, and programme developers by providing insight into the contribution of Green-Jobs Education to adults’ awareness of emerging sustainable occupations. It is recommended that relevant Adult Education programmes provide structured learning opportunities covering green occupations, sustainability-related skills, emerging employment trends, and career pathways within sustainable economic activities. The study concludes that Green-Jobs Education can strengthen adults’ ability to identify emerging sustainable occupations and support more informed decisions concerning career exploration and future skills development.
