Impact of Heritage Education on Adults’ Participation in Local Heritage Programmes
Abstract
Heritage education involves learning activities that help individuals understand, appreciate, preserve, and participate in activities connected with cultural and historical heritage. Local heritage programmes provide opportunities for adults to engage with cultural sites, traditions, historical resources, community practices, and other forms of heritage within their communities. However, limited knowledge and appreciation of local heritage may reduce adults’ willingness to participate in heritage-related programmes. This study will examine the impact of Heritage Education on adults’ participation in local heritage programmes. Heritage Education provides adults with opportunities to acquire knowledge about the historical, cultural, social, and community significance of local heritage resources. Through guided discussions, cultural activities, exhibitions, heritage visits, demonstrations, storytelling, and community-based learning, adults can develop greater appreciation of their local heritage. These educational experiences can also expose adults to available heritage programmes and encourage them to understand the importance of active participation in preserving and promoting local heritage. Participation in local heritage programmes refers to adults’ involvement in organized activities designed to promote, preserve, document, interpret, or celebrate local cultural and historical heritage. Such participation may include attending heritage events, visiting heritage sites, contributing to cultural activities, supporting preservation initiatives, and taking part in community heritage projects. Heritage Education can influence participation by increasing adults’ knowledge of local heritage and helping them understand the value of becoming actively involved in heritage-related activities. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Heritage Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate participation scale designed to measure adults’ participation in local heritage programmes. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of Heritage Education on adults’ participation in local heritage programmes. The study is expected to establish that Heritage Education has a positive impact on adults’ participation in local heritage programmes. Adults who are exposed to relevant heritage learning activities are expected to demonstrate greater willingness and involvement in heritage events, preservation activities, cultural programmes, heritage visits, and other local heritage initiatives. The study is also expected to indicate that increased knowledge and appreciation of heritage can encourage adults to become more actively involved in activities that promote and preserve local heritage. The findings will have implications for Heritage Education practitioners, cultural organizations, community educators, heritage managers, and programme planners. Heritage Education programmes should incorporate practical and participatory activities that enable adults to interact directly with local heritage resources and programmes. Heritage visits, cultural exhibitions, storytelling sessions, demonstrations, community projects, and participatory preservation activities may help adults develop stronger interest and encourage sustained participation in local heritage programmes. The study will be significant to adult learners, community members, Heritage Education practitioners, cultural organizations, heritage managers, and communities seeking to preserve their cultural heritage. It is expected to demonstrate the importance of education in encouraging adults to participate actively in local heritage programmes and contribute to heritage preservation. The study will recommend greater integration of practical heritage activities into relevant Adult Education programmes and the development of accessible community-based heritage learning opportunities. It will conclude that effective Heritage Education can contribute to increased adult participation in local heritage programmes and support the preservation and promotion of local heritage.
