Impact of Heritage Education on Adults’ Understanding of How Historical Objects Are Preserved

Abstract

Adult learning programmes provide opportunities for adults to acquire practical knowledge and skills that can be applied to personal, family, and community activities. Family history documentation involves the systematic collection, organization, preservation, and presentation of information about family members, experiences, relationships, traditions, significant events, and other aspects of family heritage. The ability to document family histories is important for preserving knowledge that may otherwise be lost across generations. However, many adults may have limited skills in gathering reliable family information, organizing historical accounts, recording oral narratives, and preserving relevant documents or photographs. This study will examine the effect of adult learning programmes on adults’ ability to document family histories, with the purpose of determining whether participation in structured adult learning can improve their practical documentation abilities. Adult learning programmes can expose participants to relevant knowledge through discussions, demonstrations, practical exercises, group activities, and experience-sharing sessions. In the context of family history documentation, learners may be introduced to techniques for collecting information from relatives, conducting informal interviews, recording oral accounts, arranging family timelines, identifying significant historical events, and organizing photographs and documents. Learning activities may also provide guidance on responsible information collection, accurate recording, appropriate storage, and the use of simple digital or non-digital methods for preserving family information. Through these activities, adults can develop practical skills for transforming personal and family experiences into organized historical records. Adults’ ability to document family histories refers to their capacity to identify relevant family information, gather information from appropriate sources, record narratives accurately, organize historical details, and preserve collected materials for future reference. Without adequate knowledge and practical skills, important family experiences and traditions may remain undocumented or become difficult for younger generations to access. Adult learning programmes can support this ability by providing structured opportunities for adults to practise documentation processes and develop confidence in recording family experiences. Improved documentation ability may therefore contribute to the preservation of family memories, historical knowledge, cultural practices, and intergenerational experiences. The study will adopt a suitable descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected Adult Education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected through a structured questionnaire and an appropriate practical assessment designed to measure participants’ ability to document family histories. The research instruments will be subjected to appropriate validation procedures, while their reliability will be established before administration. Data collected will be analysed using relevant descriptive and inferential statistical techniques to determine the effect of adult learning programmes on adults’ ability to document family histories. The study is expected to establish that participation in adult learning programmes has a positive effect on adults’ ability to document family histories. Adults who participate in relevant learning activities are expected to demonstrate improved ability to collect family information, organize narratives, record important events, and preserve supporting materials. The study may also establish that practical exercises, oral-history activities, guided interviews, and documentation projects provide useful opportunities for adults to develop confidence and competence in family history documentation. Such findings would demonstrate the practical value of adult learning in supporting the preservation of personal and intergenerational knowledge. The findings will have implications for Adult Education practitioners, programme facilitators, community educators, and curriculum developers. Adult learning programmes can incorporate family-history documentation activities that encourage learners to explore their personal and family backgrounds while developing practical information-management skills. Facilitators may use interviews, storytelling sessions, family timelines, document-organizing exercises, and simple digital documentation activities to make learning practical and meaningful. Such activities can also encourage intergenerational interaction by creating opportunities for adults to engage older family members and other relatives in the collection and preservation of historical information. The study will be significant to adult learners, families, community organizations, cultural groups, educators, and researchers interested in family and cultural heritage preservation. It will provide useful information on how adult learning programmes can strengthen adults’ capacity to document and preserve family histories for future generations. The study will recommend the inclusion of practical documentation activities in relevant Adult Education programmes and encourage facilitators to promote responsible collection, organization, and preservation of family information. It will conclude that strengthening adults’ documentation abilities through adult learning can contribute to the preservation of family memories, experiences, and historical knowledge across generations.
