Impact of Indigenous Knowledge Programmes on Lifelong Learning Participation among Rural Adults

Abstract

Indigenous knowledge programmes refer to organized learning activities through which adults acquire, preserve, and exchange knowledge developed within their local communities, while lifelong learning participation refers to adults’ continued involvement in learning activities throughout different stages of life. Indigenous knowledge programmes can provide rural adults with meaningful learning experiences that connect education with local practices, traditions, occupations, and community experiences. However, limited opportunities to engage in relevant and culturally meaningful learning may affect adults’ continued interest in learning. Therefore, this study examines the impact of indigenous knowledge programmes on lifelong learning participation among rural adults. Indigenous knowledge programmes may involve local knowledge-sharing sessions, traditional skills training, community demonstrations, storytelling, apprenticeship activities, agricultural knowledge exchange, and other culturally relevant learning activities. These programmes enable adults to learn from experienced members of their communities and contribute their own knowledge and experiences. They can also make learning more meaningful by connecting educational activities with familiar practices and local realities. Through regular exposure to such programmes, rural adults may develop greater interest in acquiring and sharing knowledge beyond immediate learning activities. Lifelong learning participation refers to continued involvement in educational and learning experiences throughout adulthood. It may include participation in skills training, workshops, community learning activities, self-directed learning, short courses, and other opportunities for acquiring new knowledge and competencies. Rural adults may be more willing to continue learning when educational activities are relevant to their experiences and daily lives. Indigenous knowledge programmes can provide a foundation for continued learning by encouraging curiosity, knowledge exchange, practical learning, and recognition of learning as an ongoing process. The study will adopt a correlational research design. The population will comprise rural adults who have participated in or have access to selected indigenous knowledge programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in indigenous knowledge programmes and lifelong learning participation. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and an appropriate inferential statistical technique to determine the impact of indigenous knowledge programmes on lifelong learning participation. The study is expected to establish that indigenous knowledge programmes have a significant impact on lifelong learning participation among rural adults. Rural adults who are more exposed to indigenous knowledge programmes are expected to demonstrate stronger involvement in different learning activities beyond the immediate programme. The findings are also expected to indicate that culturally relevant learning experiences can encourage adults to value continuous knowledge acquisition, skills development, and knowledge exchange. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of adults. Adult education facilitators may need to recognize and incorporate relevant local knowledge into learning activities for rural adults. Storytelling, practical demonstrations, community-based instruction, local apprenticeship, and experience-sharing activities can provide meaningful approaches to adult learning. Such methods may help connect formal and non-formal education with the knowledge and experiences that rural adults already possess, thereby encouraging continued interest in learning. The study will be beneficial to rural adults, adult education facilitators, community leaders, indigenous knowledge holders, adult education institutions, programme administrators, and education planners. Rural adults may benefit from learning opportunities that recognize their existing knowledge and provide pathways for further learning. Facilitators and programme administrators may gain insight into the value of culturally relevant learning programmes, while indigenous knowledge holders may have greater opportunities to contribute to educational activities. Education planners may also use the findings when developing adult education programmes that reflect local learning needs and experiences. The study recommends that adult education institutions should incorporate relevant indigenous knowledge into adult learning programmes designed for rural communities. Facilitators should use community-based learning activities, practical demonstrations, storytelling, apprenticeship, and knowledge-sharing sessions to create meaningful learning experiences. Programme administrators should also collaborate with local knowledge holders when designing educational activities. In conclusion, indigenous knowledge programmes can provide culturally relevant learning experiences that encourage rural adults to remain involved in lifelong learning.
