Impact of Learner Support Services on Satisfaction among Adult Education Participants

Abstract

Learner support services refer to the academic, administrative, counselling, informational, and other forms of assistance provided to learners to facilitate their educational experiences, while satisfaction among adult education participants refers to the extent to which participants are pleased with the quality of learning experiences, support, facilities, and services provided by adult education programmes. Effective support services can help adult learners overcome educational challenges and have more positive learning experiences. However, inadequate guidance, limited academic assistance, poor communication, and insufficient support may reduce participants’ satisfaction. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of learner support services on satisfaction among adult education participants. Learner support services may include academic guidance, counselling, orientation, information services, administrative assistance, study support, and assistance with learning difficulties. These services are intended to help adult learners understand programme requirements, access relevant information, manage learning challenges, and obtain appropriate assistance throughout their educational experience. Effective support services should be accessible, timely, relevant, and responsive to the needs of adult learners. Satisfaction among adult education participants reflects learners’ perceptions of how well the programme meets their educational expectations and needs. It may be reflected in their assessment of support services, communication, instructional assistance, administrative processes, learning facilities, and general programme experience. When participants receive adequate and timely support, they may develop more positive perceptions of the programme. Learner support services can therefore influence satisfaction by improving the quality of assistance available to participants and helping them navigate different aspects of their educational experience. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will consist of adult education participants in selected adult education programmes within the study area, from which a representative sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to obtain information on learner support services and participants’ satisfaction. The data collected will be analysed using descriptive statistics and appropriate inferential statistical techniques to determine the impact of learner support services on satisfaction among adult education participants. The study is expected to establish that learner support services have a significant impact on satisfaction among adult education participants. Participants who have access to adequate academic guidance, counselling, information, administrative assistance, and learning support are expected to report higher levels of satisfaction with their educational experiences. The findings may also indicate that accessible and responsive support services contribute to more positive perceptions of programme quality and learner experience. The findings will have implications for adult education practice by emphasizing the importance of providing comprehensive support services throughout the learning process. Adult education providers should ensure that participants can easily access academic, administrative, counselling, and informational assistance when needed. Adult educators and programme administrators can also use learner feedback to identify gaps in existing support services and make improvements that respond to participants’ educational needs. The study will be beneficial to adult education participants, adult educators, counsellors, programme administrators, learning centre managers, adult education providers, and policymakers. Participants may benefit from improved support and more satisfying educational experiences, while educators and administrators may gain useful information for strengthening learner support systems. Policymakers and programme providers may also use the findings to improve the quality and responsiveness of support services within adult education programmes. The study will recommend that adult education providers should strengthen learner support services by providing accessible academic guidance, counselling, orientation, administrative assistance, and reliable programme information. Support personnel should be adequately trained to respond promptly and appropriately to participants’ concerns. Regular feedback should also be obtained from adult learners to identify areas for improvement. The study concludes that effective learner support services can contribute significantly to satisfaction among adult education participants by creating a more supportive, responsive, and learner-centred educational environment.
