Impact of Learning Goal-Setting Activities on Adult Learners’ Persistence with Difficult Tasks
Abstract
Learning goal-setting activities involve structured exercises that help learners establish clear objectives, determine desired learning outcomes, and identify steps for achieving them, while persistence with difficult tasks refers to the ability to continue working on challenging learning activities despite obstacles, errors, or temporary setbacks. Persistence is particularly important among adult learners who may encounter demanding academic tasks alongside work, family, and other responsibilities. However, difficulty sustaining effort when learning tasks become challenging may affect learners’ progress and achievement. Therefore, this study aims to examine the impact of learning goal-setting activities on adult learners’ persistence with difficult tasks. Learning goal-setting activities provide adult learners with opportunities to establish specific learning objectives and determine practical steps for achieving them. These activities may include identifying desired outcomes, breaking larger learning tasks into manageable stages, establishing target points for completion, monitoring progress, and reviewing goals when necessary. Through regular engagement in such activities, learners may develop greater awareness of what they intend to achieve and how their efforts contribute to their learning progress. Persistence with difficult tasks involves maintaining effort and continuing engagement when learning activities require considerable concentration, repeated attempts, problem-solving, or additional practice. Persistent learners are more likely to remain engaged with challenging activities rather than abandoning them when difficulties arise. Learning goal-setting activities can support persistence by giving learners clear objectives and a structured basis for monitoring their efforts and progress toward completing demanding learning tasks. The study will adopt a descriptive survey research design. The population will comprise adult learners enrolled in selected adult education programmes within the study area. A sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling procedure, while data will be collected through a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in learning goal-setting activities and learners’ persistence with difficult tasks. The data collected will be analysed using appropriate descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, with the relevant hypothesis tested at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that learning goal-setting activities have a positive impact on adult learners’ persistence with difficult tasks. Adult learners who participate regularly in goal-setting activities are expected to demonstrate greater willingness to continue working on challenging learning tasks, maintain effort when difficulties arise, and complete demanding activities rather than abandoning them prematurely. The findings are expected to have implications for teaching and learning in adult education. Adult educators may incorporate structured goal-setting activities into instructional practices and guide learners in establishing manageable objectives for challenging learning tasks. Progress-monitoring activities and regular review of learning goals may also help learners maintain purposeful engagement when they encounter difficulties during the learning process. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, programme coordinators, educational planners, and policymakers. Adult learners may benefit from stronger commitment to challenging learning activities, while adult educators may gain useful strategies for encouraging sustained learner engagement. Programme coordinators and policymakers may also use the findings to strengthen learner-support approaches that promote continued participation and effort in adult education programmes. The study will recommend that adult education programmes incorporate practical goal-setting activities into learning experiences and encourage learners to establish clear and manageable objectives for demanding tasks. Adult educators should provide opportunities for learners to monitor their progress, review their goals, and recognize progress toward completion. The study will conclude that structured learning goal-setting activities can strengthen adult learners’ persistence and encourage continued engagement with difficult learning tasks.
