Impact of Literacy Education on Communication among Migrant Adults
Abstract
Literacy education refers to organized learning activities designed to develop adults’ reading, writing, comprehension, and functional communication skills, while communication refers to the ability to exchange information, ideas, feelings, and messages effectively with other people. Migrant adults may experience communication difficulties due to limited literacy skills, language differences, unfamiliar social environments, and challenges in understanding written and spoken information. This study will examine the impact of literacy education on communication among migrant adults. Literacy education provides migrant adults with opportunities to develop reading, writing, comprehension, and practical language skills through classroom instruction, group discussions, guided exercises, and everyday literacy activities. These learning experiences can help adults understand written information, express themselves more clearly, and communicate in different social situations. Literacy programmes can also expose migrant learners to vocabulary and communication practices that are useful in their new environments. Communication among migrant adults involves the ability to understand messages, express ideas, exchange information, ask questions, respond appropriately, and interact effectively with other people. Improved literacy skills can support communication by enabling migrant adults to interpret written messages, prepare written information, understand instructions, and express their thoughts with greater confidence. Literacy education may therefore strengthen the ability of migrant adults to communicate effectively in everyday and community settings. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise migrant adults participating in selected literacy education programmes in the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and a communication skills assessment designed to measure participation in literacy education and communication ability among migrant adults. The instruments will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that literacy education has a significant positive impact on communication among migrant adults. It is expected that migrant adults who participate actively in literacy education programmes will demonstrate improved ability to understand information, express ideas, interpret written messages, and interact effectively with others. The study may also establish that practical literacy learning can provide migrant adults with communication skills that are useful in everyday social and community situations. The findings will have implications for the teaching and learning of migrant adults in literacy education programmes. Adult educators should use practical and participatory teaching approaches that connect literacy instruction with real-life communication situations. Reading exercises, writing activities, role-play, group discussions, vocabulary development, and practical communication tasks can help migrant learners apply literacy skills to everyday interactions. The study will be beneficial to migrant adults, adult educators, literacy programme providers, community learning centres, migrant-support organizations, and policymakers. Migrant adults may benefit from improved literacy and communication abilities, while adult educators may gain useful information for developing programmes that respond to the communication needs of migrant learners. Organizations supporting migrant communities may also use the findings to strengthen literacy initiatives that promote effective communication. The study will recommend that literacy education providers develop practical and accessible programmes that address the communication needs of migrant adults. Adult educators should incorporate reading, writing, comprehension, vocabulary development, and practical communication activities into their instructional practices. Learning materials should reflect everyday situations that migrant adults encounter in their communities. In conclusion, effective literacy education can equip migrant adults with important literacy and communication skills that support clearer expression, better understanding of information, and more effective interaction with others.
