Impact of Oral History Education on Adults’ Documentation Skills

Abstract

Oral history education provides adults with opportunities to acquire knowledge and practical skills for collecting, recording, organizing, and preserving information about people, events, experiences, and community histories. Documentation skills refer to the ability to systematically record, organize, describe, store, and preserve information in forms that can be accessed and used for future reference. Weak documentation skills may result in the loss, distortion, or disorganization of valuable historical information. The study therefore aims to examine the impact of oral history education on adults’ documentation skills. Oral history education introduces adults to methods and principles involved in collecting and preserving personal and community accounts of past experiences. Through lessons, interviews, demonstrations, practical exercises, field activities, and discussions, learners can acquire knowledge of interview preparation, questioning techniques, note-taking, audio or written recording, information organization, and appropriate preservation procedures. These learning experiences can help adults understand the importance of systematic documentation when collecting historical accounts from individuals and communities. Adults’ documentation skills involve the ability to gather relevant information, record oral accounts accurately, organize collected materials, identify important details, and preserve records for future access. Effective documentation also requires attention to accuracy, clarity, consistency, organization, and appropriate handling of information obtained from individuals. Oral history education can improve these skills by giving adults practical opportunities to plan interviews, collect oral accounts, record information, and organize historical materials systematically. The study will adopt a survey research design. The population will comprise adults participating in selected oral history or adult education programmes, from which an appropriate sample will be selected using a suitable sampling procedure. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire and appropriate skills-assessment items designed to measure exposure to oral history education and adults’ documentation skills. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Descriptive statistics will be used to answer the research questions, while an appropriate inferential statistical technique will be employed to test the hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that oral history education has a positive impact on adults’ documentation skills. Adults exposed to relevant oral history education are expected to demonstrate improved ability to plan information collection, conduct and record interviews, organize oral accounts, identify important historical details, and preserve collected information systematically. The study is also expected to indicate that practical exposure to oral history methods can strengthen adults’ confidence and competence in documenting community experiences and historical accounts. The findings are expected to have implications for the teaching and learning of adult education by emphasizing the importance of practical skills development alongside theoretical knowledge. Adult educators may use interviews, fieldwork, documentation exercises, demonstrations, community history projects, and guided practice to develop learners’ documentation skills. Such approaches can make oral history education more experiential and enable adults to apply classroom knowledge to the collection and organization of real-life historical information. The study will be significant to adult learners, adult educators, community historians, cultural organizations, libraries, archives, and adult education programme planners. Adult learners may acquire practical documentation skills that can be applied to recording community experiences and historical accounts. Adult educators may gain useful information for designing practical oral history learning activities, while cultural organizations, libraries, and archives may benefit from a wider pool of individuals capable of collecting and organizing community historical information. Programme planners may also use the findings to strengthen adult learning programmes that develop practical documentation competencies. The study recommends that oral history education programmes should incorporate practical documentation activities that allow adults to develop skills through direct experience. Adult educators should provide training in interview planning, recording, note-taking, organization, preservation, and responsible handling of oral accounts. Learners should also be encouraged to maintain accurate records and obtain appropriate consent when documenting personal or community histories. It is concluded that oral history education can serve as an effective avenue for strengthening adults’ documentation skills and improving their capacity to systematically record and preserve valuable historical information.
