Impact of Parenting Education Programmes on Parent-Child Communication

Abstract

Parenting education programmes are organized learning activities designed to provide parents with knowledge, skills, and practical guidance for effective parenting, while parent-child communication refers to the exchange of information, feelings, ideas, and concerns between parents and their children. Effective communication is important for building trust, understanding children’s needs, resolving misunderstandings, and supporting healthy family relationships. However, some parents may lack adequate knowledge of effective communication strategies and may experience difficulties communicating with their children. Parenting education programmes can provide parents with relevant knowledge and skills that may improve the quality of communication within the family. Therefore, this study will examine the impact of parenting education programmes on parent-child communication. Parenting education programmes may include parenting classes, family education workshops, counselling, seminars, discussion groups, and community-based learning activities. These programmes can expose parents to effective listening techniques, respectful communication, age-appropriate interaction, emotional support, conflict management, and constructive ways of responding to children’s concerns. Through these learning experiences, parents may develop greater awareness of their children’s communication needs and acquire practical approaches for improving everyday interactions. Parent-child communication involves listening, expressing thoughts and feelings, asking questions, sharing information, discussing family issues, and responding appropriately to one another. Parents who acquire effective communication skills through parenting education may become better able to listen to their children, explain issues clearly, encourage open expression, and respond constructively to concerns. Parenting education programmes can therefore contribute to improved parent-child communication by strengthening parents’ knowledge, communication skills, and confidence in interacting with their children. The study will adopt a quantitative research design. The population will comprise parents participating in selected parenting education programmes and those with children within the study area. Data will be collected using a structured questionnaire designed to measure participation in parenting education programmes and the quality of parent-child communication. The instrument will be subjected to appropriate validity and reliability procedures before administration. Data collected will be analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, while the relevant hypothesis will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. The study is expected to establish that parenting education programmes have a significant positive impact on parent-child communication. It is expected that parents who participate in parenting education will demonstrate improved listening, clearer expression, greater openness, and more constructive communication with their children. The findings may further indicate that parenting education provides parents with practical communication strategies that can strengthen everyday interactions and promote better understanding between parents and children. The findings will have implications for teaching and learning in adult education by emphasizing the importance of practical communication and family relationship skills within parenting education programmes. Adult educators may use role-play, group discussions, demonstrations, and practical communication exercises to help parents develop effective interaction skills. Learning activities should also provide opportunities for parents to reflect on their communication practices and apply newly acquired skills to everyday family situations. The study will be beneficial to parents, children, adult educators, parenting education providers, family counsellors, schools, educational administrators, and policymakers. Parents may benefit from improved communication skills and greater understanding of their children’s needs, while children may benefit from more supportive and open interactions with their parents. Adult educators and parenting education providers may also use the findings to improve family-focused learning programmes and strengthen communication-related content. The study recommends that parenting education providers should incorporate practical parent-child communication skills into their programmes through demonstrations, role-play, discussions, and guided practice. Parents should be encouraged to develop active listening, respectful communication, and open dialogue with their children. Schools and community organizations should also support accessible parenting education opportunities. It is concluded that effective parenting education programmes can significantly improve parent-child communication by equipping parents with the knowledge, skills, and confidence required to communicate more effectively with their children.
